Evening buffet/food

  • We're having our meal at 6pm too, so we're serving cheese & biscuits at about 9pm. The cheese is from our cheese wedding cake so it isnt costing us much more either

Our meal was at 5:30pm so we didn't bother with a buffet. Honestly, it's just not needed if you have a later wedding breakfast. Our guests had a three course meal at 5:30pm and then the cake was sliced and put out about 8:30pm. No one said they were hungry and I didn't see anyone sneak off to the club house (we were in a barn on a golf course) for a bag of crisps!

How many times do you eat a three course meal for your dinner and then have a plate of nibbles a few hours later?

About as often as I stay out til about 12 drinking and socialising

I think if you are having evening only guests joining later then I would have a buffet or some sort of food.

If you are eating late then you might get away with cake and coffee later if its only all day guests.
  • Fair point re evening guests. Our guests were there all day (we didn't have additional evening guests). Honestly though, at all the weddings I've been to the buffet gets picked at because of there, and most of it gets left. Three course meal and a slab of cake is plenty for most people. :)

Evening buffet makes sense if you do the earlier ceremony and meal at 3-4pm as people wouldn't have had much for lunch. Our ceremony was 3:30 so people had lunch then came to the venue.

I think this is a really clever idea...it provides a light snack for those who were at the earlier reception...and if other people are joining just for the evening provides them with something to eat that isnt too fussy..ie you dont need to provide a vegetarian option seperately

you could add some pickles/relishes, crusty breads/crackers,celery etc...and for those who like sweet things pop a plate of wedding cake at the side

The last wedding I went to didn't have a proper evening buffet but there were staff wandering about with mini bacon butties and little posh fish and chip cones. It was just enough to soak up the copious amounts of wine we'd been drinking and it was good as it didn't get in the way of the partying because there was no mad rush for the buffet table, and no plates lying around!
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!

  • At my sister's wedding the chip butties and wedding cake came out about 9 o'clock following the meal at about 5 o'clock, and went down an absolute storm. Pizza is a good idea, as is the cheese board.

  • we married at 3 had a buffet at 5.30-6ish and then wedding cake later on-no one complained of being hungry and no one seemed to sneak off to the restaurant either.

I think its another one of those regional variations! Its usual to have it made with sausages here, either lorne or link. I love beeroot but I've never put the two together. May try that. I usually have stovies on a buttered roll with about an inch of butter yum yum :D

Well I'll have to try it with sausage and we can compare notes! Don't fancy having on a roll (presume you mean a soft roll as opposed to what we call a roll or rowie here).

Yeah soft roll! Its really good ;)
  • We're planning on having bacon baps and chip butties in the evening at about 9pm (wedding breakfast 4.30). They will be carried around in little baskets!

One of the things that put me off a lot of the hotels were the evening menus and when we talked about cutting it down they wouldn't budge (we booked 18 months in advance though). That's why I'm getting married in a barn - we can do what we want, we just tell the caterer.
