I've purchased 4 text books for a total of £17.98 this week.

Its the same place I purchased my books from last year and I've saved a fortune. Granted, they are second hand, but they list the condition on the site- some I have purchased have obviously never been used!

    Have a look at www.abebooks.co.uk

My reading lists are quite long so I always ask my lecturer which they would recommend and buy no more than 2 for each module.

I'm rubbish at returning library books on time so only use the library if I really need to. Saves carrying heavy books around as well!
  • There is no need to buy stack loads of books.

University libraries are, on the whole, pretty good as long as you are prepared to act quickly.

During my 3 years I bought maybe 2 books 2nd hand, both of which in retrospect were a waste of money, spending around £20 in the process and got a first so you don't need to spend shed loads.
  • As soon as I sort out my student card (purse got nicked) I'll be in the library getting what I need. And then a reminder or 2 set on things like phones, internet etc to remind me to renew online should pretty much get me sorted. Though if I find a particular book will be really useful during revision etc and I'd like to draw all over it then I'll look into buying.
  • I just realised I have about £200 worth of textbooks I no longer need... oh eBay, I here you calling!

How to avoid spending all your loan on books:
    1. Go to the library well before anyone else. Don't wait for exam time. If you get a copy of the reading list before the course starts, go then!
    2. Club together with some friends to buy books between you - or just agree to lend each other the books. That way at least it's one copy per five people, say, instead of one per 50.
    3. Check the noticeboards in the student's union, and in the buildings where your lectures are. Other students will be desperately trying to raise beer money by selling their old textbooks, take advantage of this!
    4. If there are any charity shops near your uni, check them all. I managed to save myself a good £50 by picking up some course books from oxfam. Also try oxfam's online shop.
    5. Check gumtree and loot for people getting rid of their old textbooks.
    6. eBay!
    7.Buy secondhand off amazon.
    8. If all else fails you might be able to find them on the secondhand shelf in Blackwells - just eb aware that there are many much cheaper places to find secondhand textbooks.

The cool thing about buying secondhand is that, as long as a new edition doesn't come out, when you come to sell them theyr'e worth pretty much the same as when you bought them.

thanks for this! Ill take a good look as there are definately a few on first glance that would be useful for a couple of quid each inc postage.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • I was lucky last year because the bookshop Blackwells gave each new student a £15 voucher with their welcome pack and some in my halls was stupid enough to throw hers away so I stole it from her bin! :D We got a free mug with each purchase as well! :D
