  • A couple of mine have been £50+, but that's ok because I plan to go at least to MA with them and can always sell them on if I ever want/need them gone.
  • Even if the books are taken out (or your library doesn't have a reference section), there should be something in place so you can recall them. It's all about learning to use the library to your advantage, because it will be impossible to buy all the books you will need to read throughout your degree.
  • I sympathise as I had to buy two books for my course, grand total cost of £80. But these books have done 3 years of my degree and will continue to be useful in for my actual job. Didn't have a choiec but to buy it. could have lived off the library copy b ut that meant no writing in it. My copies I can highlight, annotate to my hearts content.

In my first year, I got the major books that lectures asked, but found that I hardly used them.

Second year I didn't bother to buy books, and just using the lectures notes and material got the top grade :D

If you really do need these books, try ebay:D

  • And scan it, ahhh the power of pdf.

Digital camera is often quicker than scanning. 2 megapixel will do an A4 page at more than adequate readability unless the print is very fine.

Don't ask me how I know that.

My Uni, Strathclyde, has a bookshop that sells new and second hand. They will buy your books off you when you are finished with them for 50% credit or 30% cash. I am another one who has stopped buying books on the reading list. If you are REALLY struggling for a particular book, my advice would be to get pally with a tutor/lecturer. I've borrowed personal copies from them before. It's not what you know... ;)

And if you are struggling reading a particular book, getting even more pally with a tutor/lecturer can also help your grades. Allegedly.

I had to see a lecturer of mine last year due to disability issues adn was told that for her course, we didn't really need a book. I didn't and came out with a 1st / 2.1.

I only bought one book on the reading list year - it had very little relevance (and information) to the course. The book I originally got (not on the reading list) was more useful.
