Skype is a way of making phone calls over the internet. Using a feature called SKYPEOUT you can make cheap calls to landlines from your computer. You will need a Skype phone connected to your USB port or a you may prefer a headset. The main advantage is that it leaves your landline phone free for other calls.
By paying a monthly charge to Skype you can make make 'unlimited' calls to landlines (subject to a 'fair use' policy). The main limit is 50 calls per day, the problem being that you will easily exceed that!
Skype calls may not be of such good quality as calls made from your landline either. The preferred way to record calls for Optimum Contact is via an 0845 number but you then really need a TalkTalk landline. Failing a TalkTalk landline, you can get a voice recorder, such as https://www.truecall.co.uk. Skype is really the last choice on the list for making and recording calls.0 -
Thanks everyone for all the useful information about this opportunity. I would really like to go for it but am just unsure re the recording situation. I am with Plusnet and in their terms and conditions it says with my package 0845 calls are included (with exceptions). I cant see anywhere what these exceptions are. Is anyone also with them or does anyone know what this means?
Many thanks, Maggie0 -
According to Plusnet, the only limitation on making calls to 0845 numbers is a limit of 60 minutes per call. That is what the salesman tells me and that is what their website says too.
Like all Telecoms providers there are also limitations on the use of 'routing numbers' and the 0845 number used to record calls for Optimum Contact is also used to route calls. In practice, TalkTalk don't implement their policy on call routing; whether PlusNet do or not I am not sure.
It appears PluNet is NOT suitable for recording calls via 0845 numbers.0 -
Thanks for posting this.
I am very interested in this, but I am with BT. I have an inclusive calls package, which include 0845 numbers, up to a duration of 1 hour, so I guess that should be OK?
What about the recording thing though?0 -
chardonnay...
The 0845 number is used to record the calls, so if use the 0845 number to contact customers, calls are automatically recorded and you don't need any recording equipment yourself.
The problem with BT is that they have other limitations on the use of 0845 numbers (in addition to 60 minutes per call). There is also a monthly maximum of 1,000 minutes and a maximum of 150 calls to 0845 numbers per month.
So, if you are a BT customer, you really need to use your own call recording equipment or switch your phone/internet service to TalkTalk.0 -

The website is working OK for me. so I am not sure what might be wrong for you. I am also doing surveys via their work website today, without problem0 -
Forgive my being a bit dim..
I have looked at TalkTalk and they have a phone package at £27.03 a month including all calls and fast broadband which is very good.
I have now looked at my account with Virgin Media and it looks like you have to have a Virgin phone line in order to have their TV packages?
Is it possible to have a TalkTalk package for phone and broadband and pay someone else for a TV channel package with Virgin+/Sky+ option?
Many thanks,
Andrea
PS And thank you again Paul for your help with all this.0
