Money Moral Dilemma: Should I sell her my car?

:eek:DONT SELL!
Apart from the moral how would you feel seeing her hurt or her being carted off by the police for running someone over OR WORSE.
I don't know the law but i know a lot of people who wear dark blue uniforms who do and if any one says anything it works its way back ( maybe as she is this unscrupulous she will say you said the car was fine but it was a wreck and almost killed me!, difficult to tell if its wrapped around a tree). I would also keep an eye out for her getting any car and then have a word with those boys in blue.0 -
I would, for their good NOT sell it to them as they would end up losing money in expensive fines or getting jailed . Besides, that could harm your reputation as that could be seen as cutting corners because if you sell the car you would be selling a car to a buyer, who won't insure it and charging them 300 pounds more than the asking price anyway which they could ironically use some of this to insure the car in the first place therefore avoiding the fines.0

One one side you want / need to sell the car and have a responsibility to yourself to get the best deal possible.
On the other this person will potentially be committing a crime and be highly irresponsible with the car - there is a moral responsibility to not condone or endorse this.
However, someone else committing a crime is not your actual responsibility. My suggestion is as follows:
Agree to sell the car, but on the condition that she will sort out the licence, tax etc. Even if this is agreed as a lot of other people insist, you have no way of checking or enforcing this - so a simple "say yes" (wink) is enough as long as you have a reliable witness to back you up that you specified this - one way to do this is to go to your bank in order to pay the money into your bank account.
Cash in your tax disk - a reasonable thing to do and this makes sure that from day one the car is illegal to be on the road (SORN) and would be flagged up by any ANPR or police vehicle check.
Notify your insurer in writing that the car has been sold.
Ensure that all the paperwork is completed and sent off to DVLA - do this yourself to make absolutely sure it is done and if possible agree to get this done a couple of days before handing over the keys. That way the car is not registered in your name and any offences will not come back to you.
At this point you have done everything you possibly can to ensure that the car is obviously not usable on the road or might appear covered by any of your tax/insurance etc.
If you see her using the car after this, then there is no problem with notifying the authorities, even anonymously - that is then your moral duty. However, not selling her the car is just doing yourself out of a good deal.
As other people have pointed out, she might just get another car somewhere else - and for the money she has, that might have false or foreign plates and so no record would be picked up by ANPR or police checks.
Selling her your car is at least trackable and although slightly twisted logic I would say that might just be the better balance overall.0 -
i am going to the bookies tomorrow to try to place a bet, that someware a person who has a old banger that they would like to sell but have not really tried to sell is offered double the cars value from the girl next door who happens to be a stripper with lots of spare cash . what do you think i might get as odds for the bet ?.. i bet the car sellers favorite song is " dream world "0

Clearly your neighbour is going to use the car without insurance, road tax etc. Will she register the vehicle in her name? Just because you send back your bit of the registration document, doesn't necessarily mean that the change of keeper will be made at Swansea. Should she cause a horrible and expensive accident, the Police could come to your door!0

I wouldn't sell a car to a neighbour, simples. However, the ridiculous statement by RUTHNJASPER needs a dose of looking at. So if you sell a car to someone and they drive away and deliberately run someone over later, you are to blame. Even if they don't do it deliberately you are to blame. Just the same as if you'd sold them a gun and they blew someone away. Really. I'm going for a lie down before I say more....
Got to say that although I can see the logic - this does not make sense. A car is not a gun.
A gun has only one use - the statement above holds out. A car has many uses - you could make the same statement about a baseball bat, a brick or even an electric toaster.0 -
If she doesn't buy yours, she will buy another one. Besides, it is not for you to enforce the law.0

The whole story smells very fishy and I am surprised everyone else has fallen for it at face value.0 -
Yes, sell it for your asking price!
Unless you see yourself as the morality police, just think, if you had advertised the car in the local paper and she just turned up and bought it, you wouldn't know if she were legal or not.
The only consideration as far as I can see is, should you really sell an old banger (I suppose that's what it is, given the asking price) to a neighbour. Could get nasty if it goes horribly wrong!0 -
I would sell the car but only if she gives you a free lap dance. Its a win win situation.0
