We sold our house to someone who killed his whole family in there 6 years later. He was carted off to a secure place and it has been on the market and been sold since.

    It happens

Wasn't implying it doesn't... murderers live in normal houses on normal streets (until they're caught!). Hopefully it's not that though! :(

Maybe a bit of googling the street name and area might shed some light... never know.

I was thinking something must have happened in those 3 months, but CCStar's right - there could actually be something gruesome or some sort of history with the house (that they were unaware of) that has put them off living there. Tread carefully (and I don't mean on any loose floorboards!).

  • Maybe they sold off part of the garden to a neighbour?

The info about it being difficult to raise a mortgage on is true. Usually you will not be able to get a mortgage unless it has been owned for more than 6 months by the current owners.

Is a good bit of info to force the reason out of the EA. Tell him you are wasting each others time if it actually was sold in June as you wouldnt be able to get a mortgage for it

  • When we applied for our Post Office mortgage they said they wouldn't consider offering to us if the current owners had been living there for less than 12 months. I initially thought it said if the house was under 12 months old but it definitely said if the current owners had it for less than 12 months.

Good luck! I hope the mystery of the quick sale and price drop unravels itself for you soon :-)
  • I don't understand this thread. I was £135k in June and now £127k. Not much of a reduction in the current market, probably a fair price. But yes the quick turnaround should be a worry.

Stu, it was the turnaround I was asking about - "Would it put you off?" - And you answered perfectly, 'the quick turnaround should be a worry'
  • Right, well I had the viewing this evening....

It is vacant. No blood stains, so I dont think there was a murder... and I didn't feel any goosebumps, so I dont think its haunted.. :D

Still none the wiser as to why its back on the market (if it was ever off the market!) My OH came to the viewing with me and he asked the EA 'How long has it been on the market' and the EA said he didn't know! ;) That strikes me as typical EA avoidance tactic, as knowing the length of time something has been on the market could affect any offer I make.

Could the Land Registry be wrong? Maybe the transaction collapsed at the last minute and some dingbat filed the paperwork in error?

The house seems in good decent enough, newish windows and a quite recent bathroom. Kitchen looks about 10 years old, but perfectly useable.

An earlier poster mentioned about chatting to the neighbours, well just as the EA pulled up a neighbour did, I was gutted as otherwise I might have collared her and asked her a few leading questions.

I dont think we will proceed with it at the moment as although it is a good property, the garden doesn't get the sun.

I know that seems picky, but I have lived in a north facing property before and it really annoyed me and in this market, I think that it is only advisable to move and up your mortgage if you are planning to stay in a property for the next 10 years, and I know that it would bug me.
  • I have had such a sleepless night thinking about the house.... Thank goodness its not 100% perfect or I wouldn't have slept at all!

We are getting ours valued on Wednesday by the same agent - Even though I dont think we will be pursuing this property, I think I would still like to know what ours is 'valued' at; as it may be drastically different to what I am thinking at the moment.

Came up on Zoopla today, sold on 12th Nov 2010 for £127,500. I guess there wasn't much wrong with it and the vendor just had to offload it quickly for whatever reason.
