Just spoke to CAB and they agree that bankruptcy is the only real option, so can I have a number to join the club please?

So now that it looks like going for it, what do I do about my bank account? Would I be able to open the co-op basic account and trasnfer all my benefits and dd's to it before the bankruptcy, then have it unfrozen, or would the bank close the account anyway? My dd's are spread right throughout the month so it's difficult to find a time when I'll have a few days no activity on the account to get a new one set up after the hearing in time to transfer everything.

So any advice on the logistics of account hopping would be great!
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Yes - Open a basic account as soon as possible and have all benefits paid in to it.

Who's best to go with? I don't want to set up a new account and move all my bills to it only to have to do it all again afterwards. (I have bipolar and have real trouble talking to people on the phone, the thought of having to go through changing everything once is bad enough, twice is just a nightmare).

Most Banks offer basic accounts (see the threads on this subject) and it would appear that the Co-operative Bank seems highly reccomended. If you don't have a Co-op bank locally and don't like on-line banking - you can try Halifax Easycash or Nat West 'step' account.
Some do credit checks, so apply for a couple in case you are rejected.

Im in too, just started filling in the forms online, and now saving for the fee!

Just one little question though, can I just turn up at court, or will I have to make an appointment?

  • Hi,
my husband and I total £37,000 in joint debt and have our court date on the 3/11. So any advice greatfully recieved. Quite aprehensive about it all, and the wading through forms is tough but shall check out the reccomended site. With 2 young kids I'm quite worried about what they may want to remove from the house.

I gather that computer used for work we should be allowed to keep. Very worried about losing the debit card / cheque book as my kids dietary requirements mean that I can not buy her food from a shop (without a 180 mile trip) so order online. As it would seem all bank accounts are closed. Being horribly girly here but how do you open a bankrupt friendly account, our credit rating is beyond low since problems occured.

Oh well shall stop panicing and hopefully we shall both get some sleep soon!!!
  • although if i think too much about it i do still feel guilty

Do you think the banks felt guilty about you being unable to afford food?? i doubt it!

Hi chaotic, and welcome to BCSC

I don't hink you should worry, unduly, about the house just yet - it will depend on how much equity you have in the property and the OR will offer the best advice - however it is extremely unlikely that you will find yourselves thrown out on the streets.

You should, before your BR hearing, open a basic account, with a cashcard, available at most banks - advice on this can be found on the FSA website - as OR will allow you to operate one bank account. Transfer any credit balances to the new basic account.

Good luck - you are not on your own.
