I never had any male PE teachers, so embarrassment wasn't so much of a factor. My Mum wrote a very honest note the first time my period coincided with a swimming class, and after that I could just tell the teacher directly. I remember my peers being really jealous, I was one of the first to start (I had just turned 12)!

Does anyone remember the period register at Secondary school after PE and games? and the grilling you got if you weren't regularly 'on' every 4th week?

aiasojo- glad you got it sorted, have you had a look down the feminine hygiene aisles, to see if they do a slender tampon, which may be easier for 1st time users?

I remember a register being called at my all girls school and having to scream "I'm on, miss" across a changing room!

We had a 'young' male swimming instructor at our all girls grammar school. He was more embarrassed than us and it was amazing how many girls had 6 week long periods once everyone realised. A stop was put to it though one week when about 20 girls couldn't participate and after that we needed a note from our parents! :rotfl:

  • I got caught short on holiday this weekend and discovered Kotex mini in the local store. For those that haven't tried them, they really are *the* tiniest things you've ever seen. about 1 inch long x 5mm diameter, but they're amazing. If she's a bit scared of trying tampons (even tampax mini are giant compared to these) she could give them a go :)
  • i'm glad the teachers were sympathetic! i had really heavy periods in my early teens that lasted ~10 days. i vividly remember one hideous female teacher effectively accusing my of lying when i missed two weeks of swimming in a row! i wasn't quite at the age to be abnoxious enough to say something along the lines of 'shall i prove it?' and instead felt humiliated! (and i actually enjoyed swimming anyway so it was all a whole mess - these things are far more important when you're 12/13!)

The same happened to me, even with a note from my mum. Luckily I was the only one sitting on the side so it wasn't so humiliating. It took me years to get used to tampons, even though I tried on many occasions.

wow there are some horror stories there:eek: , makes you wonder how we all ended up so normal dizzy.gif
    Alias hello grin.gif

so difficult when they are young like that as they are super sensitive about it all. my DD2 was a swimmer and trained everyday so i dreaded her starting as she couldnt miss a weeks training each month , i bought her some lilet minis and she has used them from day 1 and been fine
you have to hope the teachers are sympathetic , if its any consolation my DH is a PE teacher , he says he has no problem with girls not swimming due periods but he is having to get used young girls coming with notes saying they cant do pe because they have had a contraceptive implant or they are pregnant

Hi stranger. *waves* :D Missed 'seeing' you around lately.

I sincerely hope a 'period note' will be the only note I ever have to write.

Daughter is quite wimpy right now, the thought of using a tampon isn't filling her with joy at all. I think it'll be a while before she starts to feel comfortable about things...she's not having a great time at the moment.
