Girls, periods, school swimming lessons.....

I'm stuck. :D

Some of you might remember a thread I posted a year ago about my girl starting her period age 9. Well it only happened a couple of times then stopped entirely. A year later and she's just started again yesterday.... properly this time.

She's supposed to have swimming at school but obviously wont be going (too early for tampons, she's not ready for those yet) but I'm at a loss to know what to write in her 'excuse' note to the teacher.

Personally I would just have written the truth but she has an older male teacher this year and she's almost in tears at the thought of me telling him her period has started, so what do I write? I'm not up for lying but she's having a hard time this time around and I don't want to make her feel any worse. Help me......:D

I would just say that she has an ear infection :)

Can you just call it a health issue? You could always speak to someone in more detail if they ask. I would imagine that teachers are pretty used to girls feeling sensitive about their bodies changing at this age, and will understand.
  • I would go for the truth. It is obviously going to be a recurring issue and the school is far more likely to question your daughter if she is having frequent 'ear infections' or other excuses. Could you possibly phone the school instead so she doesn't have the embarrasment of handing in the note?

I think you need to tell the truth tbh, better that he knows incase she has a period 'emergency' at any time. It may be something he's not dealt with before and he deserves a heads up so he can familiarise himself.

How about writing the letter to the school secretary instead and let them tell him without making your DD aware that they have?

I would go in and have a chat with the secretary.

I always just wrote 'DD is unable to take part this week, please contact me if this causes a problem', and left it at that.
The teacher will have come accross this time and time again so no real need to go into any details.
If the note is unacceptable the school should contact you.

Thanks all. :) csh, I like that suggestion, I may write that in future notes.

Well we compromised. I explained it probably wasn't a good idea to tell a lie about what was really wrong with her so she agreed we should tell the truth but we've addressed the note to the female class assistant teacher rather than 'Sir'. I explained in the note she was feeling a bit embarrassed about it all which is why we addressed the note to her particularly.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I remember this so well, and at recall how embaassed i was about being excused :)

I agree to be honest but could you dress it up in some medical term

Off net - what is the medical term for when a girl first starts her period - answer : Menarche

That maybe wouldn't be so obvious for your daughter

Lol go cat...knowing our luck, 'Sir' would look puzzled and ask 'what's that when it's at home then'? :rotfl:

Don't make things up, just give the teacher some credit and give him a call to tell him the situation. He may not have periods himself but he has probably see it all before and is going to be mature about it, he most likely has a wife/girlfriend so will be able to deal with the situation with a bit of sensitivity.
