What ani needs is social housing, ie a council place or a housing association place with cheaper rent. But as always ani would be waaaaaaaaaaaaay bottom of the list to be eligible for a place.

I don't necessarily know what you are both talking about newspaper on the track, but have a very good idea when I read what ani had written, what they were talking about.

ani - I am not posting, as I don't know what to say any more. I know you don't need suggestions. We have been there.

I know you need hugs, sympathy and empathy - you have all those from me.

I can only wish for a miracle for you.

ani you mention a charity food shop. but have you thought about asking the salvation army for a food parcel.Or the local churches. You don't have to be a member you just have to be in need.

I can only say I am sorry for not realising about the post bankruptcy position you were in ref still have expenditure (needed) greater than income. I know it is not idea, but would lodging in someones house be cheaper rent/bills wise?

I hope you get a decent break soon

Isn't this what this diary has been about? How to survive on virtually no income. It isn't possible. There are certain sectors of soceity who slip through the safety net, ( what safety net )? The UK is a land of plenty for some and not for others.

A charity is very kindly, buying me £50 worth of food, this year and last year. I'm honoured, they helped me a second year. They don't have the funds to help, any more than this. There are other people who need their help.

Can i go to the salvation army every week? Or the church, every week? Anyway. I'm beyond believing in god. Doesn't god and his followers reject sinners? Yes they do. There are certain things you must not do, or you won't be accepted into the kingdom of god. I wonder if terrorists are accepted into the kingdom of god? That could start a debate. If you had someone to debate with, of course.

Its been hard going, not having a shoulder to cry on. Someone there to talk to or share the enorrmous pressures and stress i've been under. I don't know why i started the diary, but few people could ever understand what its been like because, in reality, few people have been there. Imagine what its like in real life, when you've no one to turn to for tea and sympathy. Or anyone that could lend you the price of a pint of milk. True friends are so few and far between, they don't exist. I know that, better than anyone. Life on the internet, is pretty much as it is in real life.

You should be able to get housing and council tax benefit on a low income even if you are self-employed so I'm not sure why they're saying you are not elegible. It'd be a bit fiddly with an income that's varied but as long as your accounts are in order it should be ok. I know an electrician who claimed when he first started out.

The money that you'd get from Jobseekers isn't money you'd pay the rent with. So the Jobseekers payment would be for food and bills only.

Your rent would be done on the Local Housing Allowance rate. This varies from place to place and depends on how many bedrooms you need. In my city, where rent is quite low in price it's £300 for someone who needs one bedroom. In Richmond, London, for example, the amount for a one bedroom can be up to £975  so they can vary quite a bit.

If you are really struggling you may have to admit defeat, give up your work for the time being, go onto Jobseekers and tell them plainly you can't afford the rent and will have to become homeless. I'm sure there are steps they'll follow to help you. That should get you into social housing. Do remember while on Jobseekers you can earn around £20 a week without it affecting your money (I think that's the amount but maybe wrong!).
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

I think ani is in a position where they just CANNOT get housing benefit. They did apply for it and were turned down, I believe.

There are grey areas, where people just cannot get certain benefits, even though to the rest of us it seems black and white that people should be entitled to certain things.

And making yourself intentionally homeless is not a good move.

The council are under no obligation to rehouse you and will not if you make yourself intentionally homeless. Most councils have long waiting lists for people wanting social housing, including homeless people. The best they may be able to offer is some kind of bed and breakfast accommodation.

Where I live, there is a church group, who have started offering a free meal every week. They say there is no obligation - you just turn up, eat, have a chat, a bit of socialising and they hope to see you the following week.

They say there is no obligation but there is always a bit about the church they believe in, prayers or story telling, etc. The way I see it, they are fabulous for doing things in the community, the events they have held, etc have been great, but I have always felt like I had to join in with the bible reading, prayers, etc and that is not me, that is not what I believe in.

    That makes me uncomfortable.

But the answer is yes, Ani, you could go every week to the SA and a church for food. They wouldn't stop giving it to you but they would try to help you rectify your situation.

If I had the price of milk to lend to you, I would, but as you know MSE does not allow us to exchange personal details.

I'm not saying intentionally make themselves homeless, I'm saying be honest. Explain the OP can't afford to eat and pay the rent then some of the rent might have to put be on hold. The landlord may chuck them out but the OP can't starve to death.

ref the salvation army i imagine that you can ask several times a year for a food parcel. But more importantly they WOULD give you that tea and sympathy as well. They might be able to help with the social houseing aspect too, it can't hurt to ask can it?

ani can you get a crisis grant from the DSS still? That way you could at least stock up on basics like rice, lentis, flour, pasta etc.

I am sorry to pry but you have no family you can reach out to for help?

Is the person from the charity still on holiday? Youseem to have been waiting ages for this.

    Possibly.

    'Nuff said? :D

Are you working this week? You seem to have been quiet, or is it just me?

    Take care.

  • Ani, I hope you are OK. Life is tough sometimes I know. I'm a bit like you in that I've no one to fall back on. I'm S/E and work has thin on the ground. I've never claimed benefits either and have worked hard all my life too. (This may change but for now it's true.) I need to keep my head up so I thought I'd follow your lead (you've inspired me with your honesty) I want to start a diary but I can't see the page to get started. How do I go about it? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
