Agree JM, my Dad will only buy Lidl chickens as he read somewhere that they have the least amount of chemicals in them and according to him they taste nicer than any other.

Chicken in the oven, spuds in the oven, cauli/brocc cheese done, yorkie pud mix in the fridge, carrot & swede awaiting mashing, husband asleep, eldest daughter mithering me to go on the laptop and cat walking around the kitchen doing her best impression of a starving stray!

    Back soon :D
Just run, run and keep on running!

  • Right.... I think I will be doing Beef. Will be attempting to do 'proper' gravy..., also attempting to make my own yorkies..
Another question.... should I use lard to cook my beef in??? I know its really really unhealthy buy hey ho!! lol. Do you get proper dripping from it?

I am looking forward to Sunday and the other half will be ready with the digital camera!!

sorry but why do you need to wash chicken? surely any bugs would be killed off when you put it in the oven and the process of washing it would most probably spread any nasties even further with the droplets of water?

My mum always washes her meat, but i saw Jamie Oliver on the telly one day, and he said not to, as more germs are spread by germs being 'splashed' around whilst washing, and if the meat is cooked properly, then the germs should be killed anyway. My mum wouldnt believe Jamie, as she pointed out, he often uses raw meat and then doesnt wash his hands properly afterwards, so she wouldnt take what he said seriously!!!! A friend of mine was then going on an advanced health and safety in the kitchen course, so i asked her to find out for me. Aparently, Jamie is right, cooking meat properly will kill any germs, and washing doesnt guarentee getting rid of the germs anyway!!!!
  • The reason for washing poultry particularly, though, is that it can get a bad smell which 'taints' the meat. It's not off (unless you have a bad experience like I did last week - the chicken went STRAIGHT back to the supermarket and was refunded!) but it does affect the taste.

Washing it is a right pain, as the sink and surrounds are disinfected afterwards....

Can I just ask what tin do you`s use to make your yorkshire puddings in? I use a muffin tin which makes them huge and are a good 4 inches.

Which is right? A proper yorkshire pudding is hollow or nice and fluffy inside?

Mine are always fluffy inside, never hollow no matter how I try to make them.

  • OK, I think it's time to clarify what we are doing, so we can agree shopping lists.

I think we are doing a mid-dayish meal - am I right? If people want to do an evening meal I can be around all day, but I'm not sure I can bear the strain of being online continually from 11am to 7pm - although I could give intermittent advice! :p

Is 11am a good time to kick off?

Could you please post if you are up for this mass cook-in, what you are planning to cook*, and what accompaniments you would like to be doing. A suggested format is below. Then we can compare notes on the accompaniments, and agree some good recipes!

*This is what you are planning to cook. Beiong the OS board, we will of course go out of our way to accommodate anyone who changes their mind at the last moment due to grabbing a bargain they suddenly find in their locality!!! (I went shopping at 7pm last night expecting to get some beanspouts for a pork stirfry. I came back with £10 worth of enormous prawns for £1, and the resulting prawn stirfry was loudly applauded by hubby and cat! :T :rotfl: )

Thisismyusername - planning lamb roast. Would like to do roasties, Yorkies, honeyed parsnips, mint sauce, redcurrant jelly

    Question

DO people want recipes for things like mint sauce and redcurrant jelly? (I would advise against HM jellies with a first time roast - too stressful! HM mint sauce is IMHO only worth doing if you/a friend have a garden full of mint which needs eating!)

Looking forward to hearing from you..........
