Question for any gammon experts out there
How can hazzie tell if the joint needs to be soaked (to get rid of excess salt) before cooking? (Sorry not to be a gammon expert myself - I have been caught this way myself!)
Question for hazzie
Were you thinking of painting your joint with honey before you slow roasted it?(this is REALLY delicious).

Hi everyone,
I think I'm sorted for red cabbage recipes now after reading this thread:-
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=276335
Yum!
New shopping list:-
*Round joint of beef (from butcher) - will take advice from friendly local butcher
*Maris Piper/IME Desiree, parsnips, red cabbage, cooking apple
*Lard/dripping from farm shop/supermarket
I've got eggs, red wine, oil, flour, milk, vinegar, balsamic vinegar, honey, onions, seasoning, herbs, tin foil etc..
I'm actually really surprised I don't need to buy more! I always thought doing a roast would be really expensive! I know the joint of meat won't be cheap - but it'll probably do us two or three meals plus stock for soup - whooppee!
My OH had the audacity to say to me last night that he doesn't think he likes yorkies - what's not too like?!?!? I'll make them anyway...

Great - you are doing a fantastic job in getting yourself organised. By the way, I'm sure you should be able to find a neighbour or colleague to GIVE you apples, this time of year!Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

Jobbingmusician, I work in a convienience store which is owned by sainsburys and work the morning shift on sundays but usually work evenings during the week.
I do tend to soak my gammon in a dish of cold water over night to draw out the extra salt which it usually has. I forgot to do it one time when I did gammon for new years dinner and it was that salty you couldn`t eat it.
I wasn`t planning on coating it with honey but I might just give it a try on sunday. It does sound nice.Debt Free Date:10/09/2007 :j :money:0 -

I've got an apple tree! (Oops) Is it okay to use eating apples?
Thanks for all your support!
