Options
Hi all

Im due to give birth to my first child in mid December, does anybody know where i could buy good quality cots, bedding, clothing and baby gear?

I'm on a low income, my partners a student and though id prefer branded gear on the cheap or good quality, comfortable cheap stuff which isnt branded (if that makes sense! :D )

wesites, links, sales, offers on baby stuff especially from mothers would be most welcome!

cheerio!

    Try https://www.nurseryandtoys.com
    and https://www.edirectory.co.uk/babybitz/

I`ve always found both cheaper than most places.

    Congratulations

Also contact your local sure start, freecycle.org.uk, ivillage.co.uk.

I got a few things from Ikea very cheap, Primark is great for clothes.
One day I might be more organised...........

Hi, when i was expecting i found that https://www.kiddicare.com was fairly cheap compared to other sites :)
Chocolate always makes me feel better!
  • Primark is good. Ebay also for clothes as babies grow so quick and you get so much given that the clothes are not worn much.

Tell as many people as you can that you're off to a car boot/ebay etc to look for things - you'll be amazed what second hand offers come your way!

The only things (imho) worth buying new are a car seat and a mattress.

Your baby won't care less if his pram has a 'brand name' on it or if it has had half a dozen owners before. And he'll thank you in the future when he's more aware that you've worked hard to save money for your family's future.

Put a 'wanted ad' on freecycle - you will be inundated with stuff.
  • Second NCT and other nearly new sales - usually very good quality items at bargain prices - but get there early and know what you want. Also kiddicare.com and ikea as mentioned previously. Have you checked to see if you're eligible for a Sure Start maternity grant (£500 per baby for those on low income)?

From someone who has wasted sooo much money on baby stuff - here's my advice...

Pram/Pushchair etc - I bought a top of the range M&P 3 in 1 pram - while it's excellent - it's not worth the money buying new. I also bought a McLaren Techno XT buggy which is suitable from birth. Could have bought that at the beginning and saved on the M&P system. Saved £50 on it too by buying at Costco.

Cots - Bought one for £100 from John Lewis. It's sturdy and will do baby no 2 due on Wednesday. With hindsight - would pick up one second hand and buy a new mattress.

Clothing - Ask lots of friends. Be ruthless when given gifts on what babies will wear. I had a clear out after finding out I'm having one of the opposite sex and couldn't believe the bags of clothes that have been worn once. If you want to buy new - try George, Tesco or Primark - babies are in their clothes for so little time you'd be amazed on how little you can dress them. Babygro's are the best for new babies anyway as they're cosy and warm and you can pick them up cheaply from the supermarkets - they wash well and some are going to be in use for baby no 2.

I wish someone had given me this advice 2 years ago. I hate to think how much I spent on stuff that's been a total waste. At least I'm learning to reuse for no 2.
So little money - so much time
  • Try your local charity shops, and boot sales and jumble sales if there are any on. Some of the charity shops in my town get really nice baby stuff in and sell it at very reasonable prices. If you join Freecycle and post a "wanted" message you'll probably get offered quite a lot of stuff. Also check small ads in your local papers and supermarkets for items like cots and prams. I agree with freda that car seats and matresses are about the only things that really ought to be bought new. For other stuff, pre-owned is often just as good (in some cases better, since you can buy quality stuff that was really expensive when it was new), and it can save you a fortune.
