I would have wrapped your knuckles earlier myself but I was at work.

I've reported the ebay seller's links so if you could all keep an eye on the posts and when they are removed can you remove your spam posts especially any who quote the link, thanks ;)

When I got married two years ago, we spent about £2400 on about 50 people (can't remember exact numbers). We cut corners absolutely everywhere, mostly by getting my mother-in-law to call in favours - we were getting married in her village and the reception was in the field by her house. It meant we got a free marque, free field, very cheap food, cost price cake and free priest. I called in favours and got a cheap band, free violinist and organist for the church and a cheap dress made by a friend...

    and the list goes on.

In short, if you know people where you're getting married or a family member does, call in favours, you'd be amazed at what you can get.

(I'm another of those who didn't care about her wedding day - I told my husband I'd marry him in the corner of a field, I didn't care where as long as I got to marry him but he really wanted the Big Do).

What is it with these soppy men eh? :D I totally know where you are coming from, I'd be happy to get married anywhere, it's the 'married' bit that matters not the wedding. But I do also think he'd go along with my ideas but he doesn't want to lose face in front of his family, I think he thinks they'll snub him if he doesn't have a big do and invite them all!

Definitely agree about trying to call in favours - my nan and grandad are very active in the church we are hoping to get married in (hence doing it there) and when we announced are engagement they were talking about various people who might be able to help :rotfl: For things like invites, menus, placecards and things, I trained as a designer so will be able to do my own then see if anyone I used to work with can supply me with some posh paper stock for cheap -(maybe even printing services actually, hmmm...)

    Hi all!

I've been browsing the wedding boards and thought I'd update you all on my antibride progress :rotfl:

I am currently trying to convince my bloke to have a late afternoon wedding 3pm-ish which will allow us to have coffee and cakes (home made of course - shop bought just wouldn't be the same!, and a nod to the German half of my family:D) at around 4pm. That way we are not paying for two meals and will just need to sort proper food for the buffet in the evening.

I think it makes sense especially as his family are travelling a fair way (and with kids  but that's a whinge for another day) so there's much less hanging about and it's more fun! I'm thinking scones and clotted cream, strawberries (to go with the champagne :D) apple strudel and a few traditional german cakes that everyone will love.

    What do you all reckon?

  • I think that sounds like a lovely idea! So long as you make sure that the evening buffet has enough so that people who've been there all day get a 'proper' meal, ie quite filling, incase they only had a light lunch while travelling? But either way, I think the tea and cake sounds great, might have to steal the idea myself :D
much work to be done - new sig coming soon...

Cheers MonkeyMonkey, steal away! I would probably provide some sandwiches and other bits and bobs with the afternoon tea, and I quite fancy trying to get something like bacon/sausage sandwiches with wedges or a hog roast for the evening do but I guess that will depend on the venue. Need to try and sort something out.

If anyone is still reading this, what happens about booking a venue? We have made a provisional guest list so have a rough idea of numbers, but my boyfriends family are quite fickle and we are not sure how many of them will come. As we will be marrying on a summer saturday, we will have to book a venue quite early, but if the invites don't go out till 4 months before what would happen if half of them decide they aren't coming? Would we just have to suck it up and pay for the minimum numbers?

We didn't do 'save the day' cards, we just rang people, told them the date and asked them for an idea of whether they thought they would/could attend, with the proviso that they could change their minds later if need be. I think the figures we got from that were about 90% accurate. That said, if you have lots of fickle guests, I don't know what you do about that.

    Hi everyone!

I am so bad, I did this with my diary thread as well, started it and then kept forgetting to update things...

That said, there hasn't really been that much to update, until now! We are supposed to be meeting the vicar tomorrow night to persuade him to let us get married in his church, I'm hoping that the fact that my nan and grandad are regular attenders will be enough as I'm only doing it there for them - I'm not religious myself but I know it will make them happy.

We haven't really made much progress in terms of what we are going to do foodwise, I still fancy the idea of doing the afternoon tea thing but I guess more can come of that depending on what the vicar says tomorrow.

Anyway, can't think of anything else to say now so untill next time! xx
