Why won't Royal Mail leave parcels with neighbour?

I have a lot of stuff delivered from ebay and online retailers.

The trouble is, despite having a large sign next to my door ("If no-one is at home please leave parcels at no 9"), the Royal Mail take the parcels back to the depot.

This is a real pain, the depot has very limited opening hours, is a few miles away and has terrible parking.

Is there anything i can do?

  • Can you actually get to talk to your postman one day and ask him. I think it depends on the postman, and what they are willing to do.
Mines really friendly and is happy leaving parcels where you ask.
  • You can ask your post person and quite often they will. But as their customer has addressed it to your house, its should really be delivered there.

As a seller I would hope that the items end up in the hands of my buyers, not their neighbours.

My postman at my last house was a right miserable jobsworth although he knew us well - he once watched my wife come out of the house shut the door and then he made her go back in and bring out some i.d. before he would give her a parcel even though she had the door key in her hand.

    or protecting himself
you have no idea how petty RM can be if they are gunning for you
staff have been disciplind before for handing over mail/packages in the street even when they know the recipient
the official line is packages cannot be left safe or with a neighbour unless it is an official safeplace
just last week the staff in my old office were told that RM are now enforcing this and any staff not following delivery protocol would be taken down the conduct code.
  • I think it depends on the relationship you have with your postie tbh, ours knows us well and if im out and porch is locked he takes my stuff to my sisters house as she lives around the corner. I loves my postie lol
  • Every parcel I send (within the UK) has a safeplace option. I include the details in the 'winning buyer' email. About 35% of buyers then email with the safeplace option.

For me the benefit is huge, the customer has no hassle but the parcel is tracked. If the safeplace option is used, then the tracking states 'item delivered to safeplace option' which is more than enough for Paypal.
  • Our postman is an absolute sweetheart; we're quite remote and if no-one's in he'll leave the parcel at our village shop.
There's always a bit of a tip for him at Christmas.
