Hi
I wonder if you lovely people could help me please. I have a pine bedside chest of drawers which have rubbed down and today got round to painting them. I used emulsion paint (l read somewhere that this can be used) as l have never used chalk paint and really want a smooth finish that l can varnish but the paint came off when l applied the second coat :-(. Should l use gloss instead?

I've had quite a good result using some emulsion with silk (rather than matt) finish. I always sand first before painting. I have in the past always used a primer first (to avoid any bleed through as Trasimeno suggests above) but the last couple of things I got fed up using chemicals trying to get the brushes clean so I've changed to a water based undercoat and it seems to have gone ok -
On a bath panel I've used water-based undercoat with 2 coats of satin white on top, with a bathroom cabinet I've used the same undercoat with the silk emulsion. No varnish needed for either, they are both reasonably hard wearing finishes.0 -
Aldi Canterbury sold out before we got there0

Was it 100% dry? I'm not really involved in shabby chicing furniture but I know if I paint my skirting boards with emulsion and then put the second coat on too early, I land up pretty much with nothing!0 -

Aldi Hythe didn't have any either, a girly said people had been asking all day ... what a con, it reminded me why I don't shop there, Hythe looked like the last 10 minutes of a jumble sale. Oh well back to Plaster of Paris. I didn't get on at all well with calcium carbonate flour. It looked ok in the packet but was very gritty,0

Funnily enough i came on to have a whinge about yellow stains coming through on a unit i am painting. Its not happened to me before. Its not pine though its some kind of wood with a veneer.0

I think the best barrier to stop staining coming through is oil based primer.0

It might just be me, but the last tin of Wilkos clear matt varnish has produced honey coloured streaks on any place the varnish was thicker than a sheet of paper.
I've returned to waxing.
Did anyone get the Aldi chalk paint? Is it any good ? ( just in case it reappears)0 -
I got some of the wilkinsons Matt varnish and it's ok. Bought it a couple of months ago. Maybe you got a bad tin?0
