eggshell should be very cleanable - it's an alternative to gloss and should be very hardwearing. Traditionally it is oil based but you can get water based versions now
It is a water based version - I do so hope it will clean.
What a great helpful thread. It is an eye opener & very helpful. Many thanks to you all.0 -
Don't forget ESP! You could use that on your dining set or your kitchen and then just paint over with waterbased eggshell. Job done. Smooth finish. No mixing and measuring. Love it!0

all you need is a bag of plaster of paris from hobbycraft or similar.
then using the emulsion you have measure ie: 300mml of the paint, 100ml of the powdered plaster, and 100ml of water.
slowly add the powder to the water mixing all the time keep pouring the powder till you have used the 100ml and it is well dissolved into the water.
then add the POP (plaster of paris) mix to the 300ml of paint and mix this in for a mnute.
then paint away.
measuring spoons are handy for getting your mls of powder, one TBS measure from a measuring spoon is 15ml
basically the mix is 3:1:1 paint, POP and water, you can cut down the water by 25% and you can always add a touch more water if it starts to thicken too much, but this time of year its not really an issue.
one thing id really recommend buy from wilkinsons is a couple of "tight mesh" tea strainers @50p, you can use this 2 ways, after mixing the POP with the water and as you are adding it to the paint sieve it through a tea strainer, also after the mix has been mixed for an hour or so pour it through the tea strainer into a new paint pot.
this sounds like messing around but it takes no time and is virtually guaranteed to give you a smoother mix.
A relative of mine, who was a commercial decorator, used to strain his paint through ladies tights. Obviously the ladies were not wearing them at the time!!!!!::DKeep on trucking!0 -
My dad (carpenter) always did the same thing!0

Although this product is primarily marketed as an agent for providing a bonding key on non-porous surfaces such as tiles, ceramics and melamine, I have also used it very successfully to freshen up woodwork previously painted with traditional oil-based gloss paint.
Rather than having to go through the laborious (and costly) process of sugar-soaping, sanding and undercoating before applying the new gloss paint, ESP does it all in one in a fraction of the time. It also helps avoid the build-up of paint when recoating with undercoat/topcoat, which can obscure detail moulding.
I have, for example, used it very successfully to repaint a gloss-painted interior door. Just brush or wipe on the ESP (it's very 'thin' so goes on just like water - hence goes on REALLY quickly, and a little goes a long way). wait five minutes or so for it to work (it cleans as well, so, as I said, no need to sugar soap if the paint is dirty/greasy), then just wipe off the excess with a rag. Leave the remaining film to dry/cure for about 2hrs and you can then re-gloss straight away. Magic! No need to fiddle with sandpaper and getting rid of dust; no need to wait until the next day for undercoat to dry.0 -
Anybody making any xmas decorations? I'd love to see some pics!:T0

Update on my chairs - I have had a little breakthrough! I bravely, with some trepidation, got the electric sander out and had a go ... And I will never look back! So I won't fiddle about making chalk paint after all - I sanded two chairs in about 15 minutes! Waiting for some new sanding sheets to arrive in the post, hope tomorrow, and I will sand the remaining two and prime them.
As a budget option I plan to use some emulsion paint I already have (pastel colours, will look a really pretty mix & match set I hope) as the main colour (2 coats I expect) Then I will live with them for a bit to make sure the colour choices are right, then prob get a clear varnish to go over the top so they will be hardwearing.0
