Thank you Emma Kate. I read that you can use the Colron one under water-based paint so I'm glad I asked! Apparently I can get the Blackfriars one from a shop in my village so very handy for me. So happy I asked as I want to get it right first time

I've used matt varnish on knots, not had any problems with using either gloss, eggshell or emulsion over them."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0

while i am not having any issues with my HMPOP paint and i know it is purely trial and error i have some concerns that i am mixing it incorrectly, but not necessarily wrong.
this is an example of my mix.
using a measuring jug:
300ml of paint
100ml water
100ml POP
well mix the POP with water slowly add too the paint.
after i used a couple of annie sloans testers i realised my texture was less coarse and i found several recipes that state.
I CUP paint or 250ml
2,5 tbs of water or 45ml
1.5 tbs of pop or 27ml
this comes out to less than a 5:1 ratio (45ml water combined with 27ml pop is still 45ml) but the paint would be thicker can my mix i assume due to the lack of water.
my mix is 3:1 when you add the 100ml of water to 100ml of pop it is still only 100ml added too 300ml paint.
many recipes i looked at say 3:1 but many just show the quantities as above with very slight variations which in the main when you break them down into mls rather than tbs and cups the ratio is 5:1.
if there recipe was wrote as mine it would roughly read.
300ml paint
60ml water
40ml pop
i like too measure accurately too get the same each time.
one thing i think is wrong with my mix is i believe my water combined with pop mix (not pancake mix like) is too wet but if i increase the pop it would be i believe too much powder, if i decrease the water it would no longer be 3:1
can anyone link me to or give some opinion on this, if possible X mls of paint, water and pop of there typical mixes.0 -
sometimes I mix one beaker of pop, one of water and 3 of emulsion, but mostly I just chuck a handful of pop in and stir furiously then add water until it feels right. I would use more pop on laminated items, medium on waxed pine and less on varnished dark wood or pine. I'd probably add a splash of water as I went along as the mix thickens. However, if I'm painting something expensive like my pine dresser, I use ASCP.0

my problem is i have too measure, then measure again just for good measure
at least now im certain i hadnt misunderstood a few weeks back.
i also have not had a lot of thickening even though its been really hot, i do refrigerate for up to 3 days if ive mixed a litre and have a 3rd left.
i did have one batch go very bitty after 5 days in the fridge but i ran it through a pair of my daughters holed tights and it was fine.
as time moves on and i work on more expensive projects i will also use ascp as its a dream to use.
im not so keen on there wax though and prefer briwax clear out of the 3 ive used.
my dad gave me a tin thats around 20 years old and im going to try it tomorrow on a inside panel of a pc desk ive done for a friend as a gift.0 -

Hi,
This one is for Chalkysoil. I am not expecting anyone to be greatly impressed for after all it is just a painted laundry basket!
What I am delighted about though, is that I have managed to post an image (was very fearful of it for some reason) and can now share what I am doing. So happy. :jGrocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

Chair painted with Wickes chalk paint
With matching cork pinboard.
This was the chair before by the way.
I did give the chair a good sanding and I must say it has held up a lot better than the ones I just painted directly onto.
Not quite sure how you size the pictures but anyway it gives you an idea.

I've got fond memories of this Laura Ashley fabric, we had it in DD's bedroom - so nice to see it again.
I can't quite remember where we got it but we have masses of the stuff!Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01
