Florenceem, I feel your pain. We've done all that too. It will all be worth it in the end!
Just seems so long to the finish line. :(

I had builders in for 3 months in 2005. They finished 6 months late .... we are still not getting around to finishing off what they didn't finish . Ah well.

I went to my first boot fair of the year today, and then a garage sale safari. Spent nearly £50 - eeek - bought a carved table and 4 chairs for £25 (I blame Emma Kate as I now have 3 dining tables :D) We had to make 2 trips back home to cram everything in the boot of a micra! But, the post came and I won £50 on the premium bonds. Fate :rotfl:

Will take some photos later. I will be painting and washing up for weeks.

Florenceem - I know how you feel, I'm still in kitchen refit mode here. It's going slowly as we hit a few snags and everyone's been really poorly. I've got bronchitis but am feeling much better so it's full steam ahead again.

I had a change of heart about my tiled floor and currently have nearly half a ton of oak parquet flooring sitting in my lounge!!! Eeeek! It will look lovely but a lot more work. I'm aiming to start laying it on Tuesday, ideally I'd like it down, stained, sanded and 3 coats of varnish by the weekend. Hmmmmm.

So my cream, cottage kitchen style kitchen with tiled floors and wooden worksurface has now morphed into oak units with granite look surfaces, oak real wood floor and stainless steel appliances. It's a good job DH just goes with the flow.

Did you find it difficult to get stainless steel appliances? My range is going to be stainless steel. Getting a slimline dishwasher and under counter fridge in stainless is not easy. As they are not going to be intergrated - I want the same makes for the two appliances. My range and cooker hood are Rangemaster.

    Debt-free and Proud!
Hi folks, can I ask a bit of advice from all you clever 'makeover-ers' please.
I have a set of shelves that is not real wood, but wood effect from argos...so covered chipboard basically.
I would like them to be white rather than the wood colour they currently are....what sort of paint am I best tackling them with?
I'm ready for a challenge and want to revamp them. :)
Thanks for any help you can give.
PAYDBX 2016 #55 100% paid! :j Officially bad debt free...don't count my mortgage.
Now to start saving...it's a whole new world!!

If you use ESP or liquid sandpaper as a first coat directly onto the surface of the shelves then you can use any paint you like to go on top of it.
Satinwood, eggshell or gloss would be conventional choices, or you could forget about the ESP and use chalk paint followed by varnish.
Put chalk paint into the thread search for lots of info on that!

I've not bothered trying to find the same make, I realised it wasn't going to happen. I've gone for a Blomberg huge fridge freezer, it's huge but lovely. The only dishwasher I really liked was a Kenwood but I wasn't willing to pay £500 for it, I've gone for a stainless steel effect one which is actually a very close match to the fridge.

I shall pop some pics over on my blog in a mo.

  • Trying to think of a worthwhile re-use of two satin duvet covers that are spotted in cigarette burns (should not smoke in bed). Unfortuantly they are not plain otherwise I could cover the burns. The majority of the fabric is fine it's just the bits at the head and a couple part way down.

    Any ideas?

Could you put strips of fabric which co-ordinate with the pattern on the parts where the cigarette burns are?

make one cover out of the two? Make cushion covers? Sew satin hearts/flowers/roses over the burns?
I say all that but I can barely sew on a button!
