Sounds perfect. Yes you can use varnish or a clear wax for a different look. If your dark wax is too heavy you can lift it with some clear wax too.

Which clear wax would most people recommend?
Also, the chalk paint seems expensive, is it avaialble at Homesbase etc.?
I am only trying to help

No mine are hollow, as I found out when I tried to hang a hook on them! It's mostly the glue that does the job with the panel pins holding it in place til it dries. The most important step is the caulk all around every edge. If you miss this your paint will crack all around every edge!
How long does it take to do a door please so I can roughly work out long the joiner will be here? Hopefully he knows about caulk.

Well, you have to take the door off, measure and draw all over it, cut your molding, glue and pin, then ideally you let it dry before you caulk the next day. It takes me the best part of a day to do both sides.
My measurements are; 9 cm in from either side, 9 cm gap in the middle vertically (so 4.5 cm either side of the centre line)
16 cm in from the top and bottom, with an 18 cm gap horizontally in the middle (so 9 cm either side of the horizontal centre line). This has worked on all my doors although they're all subtly different sizes. Our house is a 1960 house.
Once you've caulked you need to let that dry for another 24 hours before you paint. I know caulk sometimes says you can paint sooner but it's always cracked if I do this! You'll need to prime the untreated moldings, then a coat or two of undercoat before you gloss.

Any furniture wax will do. I use Liberon paste wax. Most folk on here probably use Annie Sloan. You can't get Annie Sloan from DIY stores, you need to go to her site and look for a stockist near you. It is expensive, but you can make your own chalk paint from recipes on here or pinterest. I prefer the one that uses plaster of paris but it behaves oddly and you need to keep adding water. If you've not used chalk paint before you might want to try Annies first so you know what to expect. It does go a long way!

I have used chalk paint for the FIRST coat to avoid sanding, then just matt emulsion for the consecutive coats. Emulsion looks flatter than chalk paint.

Thank you.
Do you or most people use fine steel wool to put the wax on or just a cloth? Also, is the following the correct sort of wax?Liberon BBPWN500 500ml Bison Paste Wax - Neutral?

I may have to invest in some Annie Sloan paint, or stick with the Farrwow & Ball.

I use a brush to put the wax on and an old t shirt to buff off. Yes that wax would be fine!

Hope this works.

your pic didn't come out - generally I think you can't post from your desktop ( I suppose if we all clicked it might crash your pc or something) If you upload the pic into imageshack or a similar free photo host, then use the url from there.

re panelling the doors .. I have 3 old 60's doors left unreplaced - they are smaller than standard so twice the price.
So I had this idea to rummage though my hoard of picture frames and see if I had 4 the right size to glue on a door ... I don't!

Can anybody tell me if there is such a thing that i can buy to spray my breadbin and biscuit tin a different colour, that won't chip off? I don't want to do it if it will look a worse mess. They are black currently, and i want to change them to red. Also where sells Dylon for the machine these days, supermarkets?Wilkos?
Thanks
