esp or liquid sandpaper is what you use as primer to avoid sanding when using any paint but chalk paint. There are various brands.
As exterior wall paint is weatherproof I'm assuming it would make weatherproof chalk paint, but I think that it might rub a bit when the deck chair legs rub against each other. I thought that it might be an option for garden furniture if you didn't want to use protective varnish.
Annie Sloan says that you can use her chalk paint for walls and garden furniture, but others say that it does wear quite significantly and prefer to use to use it for indoor items.

Exterior wall paint like weathershield is designed for use on stone or masonry rather than wood. Oil based gloss or eggshell is what you'd traditionally use on your exterior woodwork.
I have used a home made chalk paint recipe for waxed pine and gone over it in neat matt emulsion but it's texture makes me think it wouldn't be good going over it with eggshell or satin as these are very flat paints and will enhance every bump in the paint. Just personal preferance though...
    But ESP might be better...
Or use a superprimer like waterbased Zinsser or Blackfriars...

Here are my deck chairs. I used CK fabric and lined the back with a contrasting fabric to keep cost down.

Looks lovely, sootypea. I love that print, I have breakfast sets in it, very cheerful. It is amazing how a bit of fabric can revamp something.

    Mrs Crafty,

I really want to make some roman blinds for my house but Ive never done it before. Only made simple curtains in the distant past. How easy is it for a beginner do you think?

'twas my first time too! It's all straight lines to be honest and as I said previously, would have been very very easy with a striped pattern to cut. Yes, I would say its definitely easy. Just hard work. The pattern on channel 4 homes is simple to follow.

    Hello all

I just bought a modern ikeeea standard lamp because I like the shape etc which is made of stainless steel (i think) and I think a spray painted silvery finish on parts of it. I'd like to distress it to fit in with an older home but have no idea.
Anybody give some pointers for a distresser beginner? I'd like it to look 'old fashioned' if possible.

    Thanks

I'm hoping to do this for a garden lovers gathering this year. :)
They act as party favours to take home with my seedlings in.

After making those blinds,I needed some privacy, so I put inch masking tape round the windows and sprayed with plastikote window frosting. Removed tape and now have an alternative to nets for less than a tenner!
