Wow....this is gorgeous......is there a tutorial for it?
Yes some on pinterest and you tube. If you click on some of the pinterest images it might take you there. In some ways I think it's easier as you're not smoothing three huge layers out all over your carpet but the square cutting is going to take some time. And then there's the seam snipping to get the raggy edge... : (0 -
I've never done a rag quilt but I thought they were done like any other square pieced quilt except in stead of sewing the squares right sides together you sew then wrong sides together so the frayed edges are on the outside and then when you wash it it frays more to give you that ragged look.
No you make a 3 layer sandwich and sew an X over each square to hold it together. Then sew'em all together and snip, snip, snip all the way along just short of the seam line. Wash and tumble for a fluffy edge. Apparently they shed like mad!
You need special sprung scissors or your hand cramps up...
Wow hmo, just found your blog. It's quilting heaven!
Do you ever use old wool blankets instead of wadding? I did this once on a quilt I almost finished 10 years ago. It gives a nice weight and is all natural so I like it.0 -
Ok here's an alternative she used flannel but it would work with abric

So is that basically a hole punch for patchwork squares? I don't have any fancy tools or even a rotary cutter. Are they good?
Yes I think this is the same technique as I'm doing. One day. When I've cut 600 squares out.0 -
Wow! That's stunning. I'm starting one but I've stuffed up on my square size and need 200 squares. Also it's a rag quilt. Has anyone here tried that? You pad it as you go but I will need a further 400 squares doing it that way. You make a sandwich of top, bottom and flannelette innner and it should end up like this:
So 600 squares to be cut! I should've done a bigger square! Doh!0 -
dogcat, sizzix make cutting dies and a cutting machine which is a manual machine called a bog shot the dies were used in card making and scrapbooking and crafters cut paper, card, chipboard etc using the die shapes all sorts of things like leaves, flowers, tags, basic shapes and they also brought out some bigz dies which were as the name suggest bigger things like the scollop square used in the rag bag tutorial i posted, big flowers all sorts.
ive used the scollop sqaure before because once you sew the qrt inch seem it ends up looking just like a regular square so can be used for patchwork.
but they now sell a range of dies specifically for quilters they sell half and qrt square triangle, the tumbler which i got for christmas, drukards path i think the apple core one there are several now in various sizes.
i would add i don't have a big shot machine i use my cuttlebug but it cuts the dies perfectly.
i mainly use a rotary cutter and big quilters ruler thats how i did the qrt square triangle above but having dies is a lot easier but you are obviously restricted to the size of the die.0 -
Hello Everyone Long time lurker here.
I've just acquired my first "project piece" having just got lost on Pininterst as per usual! I thought I'd as you all if you have any ideas as to what to do with it!

I know I'd like to wallpaper the back board and use it to display my ornamentals other than that I have no idea! I don't think painting it all white will do it justice and neither will black.
Any thought will be great, Thank youAspiring to be financially independent.... from my parents!0 -

How cute is that? I think you're right. It's such a strong design that it could take a pop of colour for sure, if your home decor allows. How about embracing the fifties look and choosing a fifties inspired colour and a fifties print paper? Check out the 'Happy loves Rosie' blog as she has a lot of red and it looks great!
Also google 50s atomic images for inspiration!0
