  • Hi all,

Finally finished reading part 3, this thread is so inspiring! 2 nights ago I picked up an old refectory table or 3 and I want to use the smaller one in our home as a dinning table (currently on the look out for chairs as my next project) it is an old dark oak table as you can see from the pictures

    http://instagr.am/p/UioLdwI7ga/

I want to paint it to look like this:

    http://instagr.am/p/Uiof2do7gh/

I have never done anything like this before but from reading this thread I'm feeling confident! I plan to just paint ober the legs in an off white colour AS not quite as błue as the picture above and then sand the table top right back and then wax the whole table, any recommendation on type?

The questions I have is, what's the best type of sander for the oak top? Grit type, belt sander or vibrating plate or would a chemical be easier? I don't want to damage the wood or create more work for myself.

    Any tips would be great?

I would use a chemical stripper on the top. I like the Wilkinsons one. You want to do it outside with a metal scraper and lots of newspaper. Just be carefull with the angle of your scraper so you're not gouging the wood. Wear gloves and do a small area at a time so it doesn't dry out.
Once the top is stripped you can sand it lightly. You should be able to do this by hand. Or use any kind of sander, just go with the grain, use fine sandpaper and keep it moving.
That brown treacley finish will just clog up a sander and melt as the sander gets hot. Yuk!
    Stripping is the best way.
I'm a fan of Liberon waxes with pure turpentine. You want CLEAR to get a pale wood look. It gives a more robust finish than Annies wax. You can also use it over your painted base too.
You will still need to protect the top with coasters and mats. If you want a tougher surface then varnish might suit you better. Sometimes I do a thin coat of matt varnish and then wax on top of that as I feel you get better protection and still retain a quite natural look.
    Good luck!
  • Thanks for your help, I've found an AS stockist near me and a Wilko but I'm not sure where to get the liberon wax with turpentine, do you have a pic?

Thanks for your help with this, If I decided to varnish the top should I wax the legs? Or varnish both? Thanks

I don't have a pic but I'm sure most DIY stores would have it.
I usually wax the legs as they don't take such a beating BUT with your table there might be a tendency to rest ones feet on the bar under the table so you might want it to be varnished as this would be more durable? Depends what look you like too.
Also with that bar you might want to give it a sand before you use the AS paint for the same reason. Any help you can give the paint to stick to it will be worthwhile as it will probably be more durable in the long run.

OMG Thank You Sooooooo Much. i only went to get something to eat, came back & my question has been answered! it is actually called 'Shabby Chic Blue Wallpaper' as well!

there are a few stockists not too far so will check them out. they actually sell it at John Lewis but it didnt show it when i did a search earlier.

OMG to the prices aswell:eek: i was expecting similar to Cath Kidston, but its double & then some! no harm in keeping an eye on it incase it gets reduced though ( i am in a housing association flat with a damp problem so am reluctant to pay too much).

had i just seen it online i would have thought 'thats nice' but not fallen in love with it like when i saw it on Miranda. i am sure i can't be the only one who notices things in the background on programmes but everyone i know thinks its odd!:rotfl:
