Well done jumblejack! You know the thread 'knit your square to do your share?' Very friendly thread where people post the charity knitting they are doing but really very chatty and lots of people happy to give tips on knitting and crochet or point you in the right direction. Lots of links to free patterns, ideas for charities and requests, and insructions.0

Hello, I'm after some advice - maybe not Shabby Chic but I figured you guys were good at painting!
I want to paint my wooden fireplace mantel but I have no idea where to start! I want it to be a pure white with a silky kind of finish (not gloss)
Just wondering what you guys would recommend? I was thinking either trying to prime it, paint it in eggshell and leave it as that? Or I was looking up Annie Sloan (expensive ) painting it pure white and then waxing?
I'm terrible at painting but I hate how it is now, so i thought if it turns out alright I can maybe brave doing the kitchen cupboards.

Hi Helenut, I would use an eggshell on it as it will be tougher than Annie Sloan. Use sugar soap first. Is it varnished? You will need to sand lightly to key the surface (just scuff it up so new paint will stick) and prime. Water based quick dry primer is fine. If your mantelpiece is pine or waxed you should use Blackfriars problem solving primer. This will keep the knots covered and provide excellent adhesion on a tricky finish.
Do take photos and let us see the transformation!0
