I bought it! And the seller delivered it for me already!

Want to get started with it tomorrow, so pleeeeeease could somebody give me a list of what I need? I live round the corner from a Homebase, so I'll be going there first thing tomorrow.

    Will these things be ok?

    1) Fine sandpaper

    2) This 'primer & undercoat' http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=110&storeId=10151&partNumber=082418

    3) This eggshell paint http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=110&storeId=10151&partNumber=344089

I know it's not F&B or Annie Sloan which I've seen mentioned, but I'm hoping it'll still be nice - reviews are positive

Do I need a wax or varnish to finish?

And how much paint/primer do you think I'll need? A 750ml tin of each?

Should I paint the inside and sides of the drawers? I'm a bit worred that if I do the sides they might stick and not run as smoothly. What do you all usually do? Does it look odd if the inside of the drawers aren't done?

Going to get some new handles too but will probably look online for those.

Very excited, this is my very first project!

Oooooh lucky you, I love it!! If you don't want the handles please, pretty please let me buy them 'cos I really like them!

If you are using eggshell you don't need to wax or varnish as it will be hardwearing enough on it's own. 750ml of each will be more than plenty.
You don't really need to do the insides of the drawers, maybe just the edges, personally I do about 3 inches of the side of each drawer as a finishing touch, but you really need to see how smoothly they run at the moment.

I can't comment on the Sanctuary paint as I haven't used it myself, but I'm sure it will be fine.

Good luck with it and don't forget to post the photos when it's done :)

First coat of primer - done.

Will get second coat started in an hour, and then maybe the first top coat done this evening.

Has anyone seen any cheap (fake) crystal knobs anywhere? Like this (need to be gold coloured base to match some on a built in wardrobe)

I couldn't really find any on eBay and in Homebase they were £3.99 each  and I need 6!

    Anyway, so far so good...

Gosh you were quick of the mark Littlesnuggy! That cabinet looks great. I personally don't paid the draw sides as they can stick. But I do paint the inside of cupboard doors usually a nice red colour.
Here is one that I did years and years ago when I was going through a folkart period. (although I still like it nowhere to put it so it lives in the shed) Forgot to add that it was just right to house a small bedroom tv.

I'm a bit late as you're already well stuck in now but if anyone else out there is interested these books are good and go into detail about primer, paint and equipment...

It's worth a look in your local library as there are many more published!

Spendaholic chick, I would always prime as this helps the paint stick to the surface. It might also be worth using some Blackfriars problem solving primer on the knots too before you prime. Or knotting if you are using oil based paints/ undercoat. You don't want them spoiling your furniture in the future.

littlesnuggy good luck with your first project, looks as though you've made a great start!
What I'd like to know is how you got someone to deliver to you when it was collection only?! Because that's a trick which we'd all like to learn I think!

Oh I do that all the time! I only look locally (nearest first) and explain that I have no car and ask if they could deliver and most of the time, seeing as we're in the same town they agree. Sometimes they want petrol money and that's fine, but mostly they are just happy to get rid of things quickly!
You don't ask, you don't get!

Thanks all - I got too excited & enthusiastic so couldn't wait to start - was sanding it at midnight last night so I could start painting it today once I'd gone to Homebase!

It's now had 2 coats of primer (waiting 2.5 hours between each) and one coat of the Sanctuary eggshell - going to do a final coat of this tomorrow evening as needs 4 hours between coats.

Looking good, but need to make sure I get the top coat free of brush strokes (each coat has been better than the last)

Seakay - I asked the seller if it would fit in my small car, and where exactly they lived as I wouldn't want to drive far with the boot half-open. They responded saying they lived about half a mile away and it fit in their estate car no problem, so they offered to bring it round for a couple of extra pounds - well worth it!
