I put a piece on top of the little table last night (DD's request!) and it looked so bad I had to take it back off, sand down, repaint and need to reattempt today. Gah!

I cut motifs from wallpaper to add to the top of a chalk painted table and I varnished over the paint first and when that was dry I applied PVA glue to the back of the motifs and they went on perfectly....then a day later when I was sure they were dry, I varnished over the top again....don't know if that's the right way to do it, but it worked perfectly for me!

You guys are so inspirational :) I have spent hours over the last couple of weeks reading this thread, browsing on pinterest, being sidelined to endless wonderful blogs. I had no idea there was so much out there. Well I've got myself a few projects to have a go at, the first is a sprung Lloyd Loom chair that needs repainting and the seat redoing. It came with a stool that has a bit of damage to the bottom of one of the legs, not sure what to do with that, some of the caning is missing, I'll have to have a think.

I've taken some piccies so I might even have a dabble at getting some before and afters uploaded.

Thank you for getting me going :j

Bananamuffin Have you looked on Etsy for bedcovers. There are quite a few including quilted ones as well as crochet.
I adore etsy, it's all just so expensive!

I think I'm going to attempt to make my own valance. I think if I buy some long window valances, I can sew them to a plain valance. I want a soft dusky pink behind the crochet anyway so rather than two valances, I can have just one. And I'm brainwaving with attaching the crochet part with velcro or something similar. The attachment part will be hidden under the sheets and mattress so you can't see it until you take the bed apart, and it will make for easier washing as well. I can't see crochet lasting too long in a washing machine!

I guess my first step should really be to paint the bed though! lol I always get a bit too carried away with projects, right down to the fact that I've preselected scatter cushions and curtains for my new bedroom.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker Savvy Shopper!
I spent the morning on Etsy looking for quilted bed covers, £200 plus were the ones I liked. Will have to find a cheaper option in TK Maxx/Homesense.

Is there a beginner's guide to painting furniture in this thread (or elsewhere) that somebody could point me in the direction of please? I.e. Detailing each stage I would need to do (sanding, priming? painting), products/paints to use etc?

Oh, and an idea of how much the materials cost plus how long it would all take (for a beginner!) would be excellent.

I've seen something on eBay that I think would look great painted white and would fit in my spare room, but as I've never done it before I don't want to mess it up or let myself into something I'll never have time to do properly.

Nobody nab it please, this is the item - need to convince OH and check it would fit in the car http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Antique-old-fashioned-wooden-chest-2-drawers-and-cupboard-/221110814464?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid=111000&algo=REC.CURRENT&ao=1&asc=14&meid=1595825029524791341&pid=100015&prg=1006&rk=2&

    Oooh I like that littlesnuggy

We picked up the dressing table yesterday, I adore it! I actually love it being dark wood but it just doesn't fit the other furniture in my room.

I would try to remove the transfers because they can crack with age and also they may react with the top coat and peel!
Littlesnuggy, I have a gazillion painting furniture books, when I get home I will have a look and see which is good for beginers...

I bought it! And the seller delivered it for me already!

    IMAG1586.jpgIMAG1588.jpg

Want to get started with it tomorrow, so pleeeeeease could somebody give me a list of what I need? I live round the corner from a Homebase, so I'll be going there first thing tomorrow.

    Will these things be ok?

    1) Fine sandpaper

    2) This 'primer & undercoat' http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=110&storeId=10151&partNumber=082418

    3) This eggshell paint http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=110&storeId=10151&partNumber=344089

I know it's not F&B or Annie Sloan which I've seen mentioned, but I'm hoping it'll still be nice - reviews are positive

Do I need a wax or varnish to finish?

And how much paint/primer do you think I'll need? A 750ml tin of each?

Should I paint the inside and sides of the drawers? I'm a bit worred that if I do the sides they might stick and not run as smoothly. What do you all usually do? Does it look odd if the inside of the drawers aren't done?

Going to get some new handles too but will probably look online for those.

Very excited, this is my very first project!
  • Can anyone advise me please? I have an orange pine cupboard which I've sanded down and want to paint white. Can I just paint it now it's sanded, or should I still prime/undercoat/something else?
