I've used burnt umber acrylic paint diluted to get a similar effect - paint on and wipe off. It worked well, but I prefer to sand paint away. Sometimes I think a wash can look grubby, but that's just down to my personal taste.0 -
Nice work Crafty Crofty - I especially like the TV unit and loft table makeovers!0

I had some help from you all in May when I posted some questions about painting a table I had found in our loft. Since then I have been busy with the paint brush! I have posted some pictures of what I've been up to and wanted to say thanks to everyone for the advice you gave me!

I am still working on the dining table and will post pics when it's done. I am also reupholstering the chairs that came with it (another first for me!)

Hi all, have just bought a LARGE pine (orange-y) dresser for £30. It is in a bad way as it had been stored in a garage that wasn't water tight, but I think with a bit of love and attention it could look lovely. Question is - what love and attention do I give it? Initially I know that I have to sand it down to get rid of the orange-y varnish but what then? I have two very energetic children (one of whom is ASD) so if I paint it it needs to be hard wearing.
Was thinking (depending on what I find after its sanded) that I could paint the unit a white / cream colour, but leave the top of the base natural and just oil it. What paints do I use, do I have to use special ones?
Any help welcome - I have read through some of the thread, but can't manage all of it yet due to the boys xxMe, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

It depends how well you can sand it as to the finish you can go for, I'd say that one on eBay has had a new back put on it as trying to get the orange lacquer off of the cladding is almost impossible. If you get a good clean sand on the top and shelves you've can either wax them with a plain or stained beeswax or go for a Danish oil type thing (never tried the oil myself)
I've just shabbied up a desk from free cycle, again it was that horrid orange pine and it took a lot of sanding to get the top clear. I tried a paint I found in home base, made by crown that is an interior wood/metal paint with a matt finish (never seen crown do one before). I used the "toasted almond" colour and it's got a gorgeous chalky finish to it and went on well with a mini roller."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -

Do we have any other cornishware addicts on here?
I've been saying for ages that I wanted to start collecting it so MIL has started me off with a big jug for my birthday. I opened it early as they're going away and my actual birthday is tomorrow but I've already spent around £50 on cornishware on eBay over the weekend and another £50 with English heritage as they had a sale on new stuff!
I think Im hooked!!!

A question for you - i see that some of you (lately Bibbitybob) have faced the front of drawers with a patternd wall paper ( i think thats what it is), may i ask when you have put it on are you still using a wallpaper adhesive or would it be better to use a textile spray adhesive? and also when it comes to finishing it are you going over it with anything to give it a protective coating? i have looked at a few things to possibly use, but the guy in B&Q said that he can't guarantee that they won't react with the paper!! i also need something that is not going to colour the paper either, as im intending to use an "au de nil" colour paper with a white pattern on it and don't want it to discolour as it then wont tie in with the rest of the room, and lastly the edging of the paper i want to put on the front of my drawers i would like to distress in in some way as don't want it looking too uniform - i know its lots of questions but if anyone could help me i would be really grateful.
Thanks once again xxxVery proud to be Strip club member No 430
