    Hello,
I have collected various pieces of wooden furniture from car boots and auctions over the last few months which need some serious sanding down and painting to fit in the dining room (welsh dresser) and bedrooms (tall boy, bedside tables, wooden chairs).

Flicking through the TV channels last night, I made the mistake of stopping on one of the shopping channels and sat open-mouthed at how wonderful their paint sprayer seemed to work. Obviously, they make it look as simple as anything and these things rarely are but it struck me that possibly, it would be a good buy if it seriously reduced the amount of time I was going to be spending painting and re-painting to get the finish I want.

Anyone tried this? Any pitfalls? I am wondering if Farrow and Ball, Fired Earth or Laura Ashley paint will simply be too thick to use in these machines? I have had a google and the info I can find really seems to be about painting using a can of spray paint which is not what I'm after. On top of that, there are many different kinds of sprayers out there!

I am interested in opinions and experiences, please!
  • I don't have a tv so never seen the sprayer to which you refer. However, having renovated a lot of our furniture I do have the experience of spraying things. The first thing is it goes everywhere so unless you have somewhere you can cover in sheets (floor and wall behind the item you are spraying) then you are going to have paint everywhere. You may also need to get some face masks as some paint in spray form can be breathed in. The final reason I would say don't buy it is that it is really hard to get a decent finished with sprayed paint. It usually ends up going on too thick and then dribbling everywhere and running - there is a knack to it. Also, I can only imagine how messy it would be to have to clean the machine afterwards.

thank you. I had wondered about whether it would achieve just what you would expect it to! I might have a look on ebay and see what I can see second hand and give it a go on a chair and see how that works. I take the point about it getting everywhere - I can do it in the garden if necessary (was intending to do this anyway when it's drier and warmer) so am not too worried about that (although I guess the neighbours might be!).

I'm not sure about replacing the top as it's not something I've ever done, but have you tried asking on your local freecycle/freegle for a table? Even something a bit old and battered could paint up nicely/be covered with a pretty cloth until your little one is old enough to use your glass table again :)

I've been posting a few updates on my blog, but I thought I'd just update you all on my SC kitchen again. Work has been slooow since Xmas, but we seem to have gathered some steam again this week and Mr BB tiled the walls.

It's hard to tell from this pic, but the tiles have a lovely crackle glaze finish to them. I can't wait for the car boot sales to start again so I can begin to collect pretty bits!

Ooooh I'm loving those tiles! Where did u get them from?

    Hi everyone,

Sorry for the absence - finally finished the tv unit I had mentioned - taking advantage of my mid pregnancy energy to get a few things done!

It was £15 when we first bought it, painted it Wimbourne White (F&B) that we already had at home, plus some clear heart handles from ebay. The top is done with danish oil. Full post about it on my blog with more detailed info.

    Quite pleased!
