My cars tax runs out end of this month and I havent got my reminder yet.

How long before the end of the month should you get it?

    QUOTE]

Just to jump into this thread - see my earlier post about expired tax disc. I'm still waiting on my reminder and my tax expired at end of August. :o

I only noticed the bloomin thing yesterday and am panic stricken - but did a little investigating and discovered on various sites that they don't always send out reminders. Then say the onus is on you to get it taxed (which of course it is) so you shouldn't really need a reminder.

I won't get caught out like this again.:(

you have a daily reminder on the windscreen ;)

Quick question what happens if I do not sorn it, but take it off the road because I have no way of taxing it until I get my number?

You get a fine if you are unable to tax it before the end of October to include the month of October. New V5 sometimes take over 6 weeks to arrive.

You might aswell Just SORN it now or on the 30th Sept. Apply for new V5 and tax it when it comes through

    OR

Go to the local DVLA office in person and apply for a new V5 and see if they will also let you have a tax disc on that day.

    its an fineable offence
    to those panicking about reminders
    my reminder arrived yesterday
so the DVLA must have just sent them

Thanks very much, maybe I will still get it in time.

I do not have time to order a new log book now anyway.

If I still dont get my reminder before the 1st Oct I will just declare it sorn.

Hypertheticaly speaking if I didnt declare it sorn, but take it off the road myself what will happen? Will they send another reminder if the first was lost?

    they wont send anymore reminders
DVLA reminders specifically state they must not be returned to sender
so they dont care if you have moved, the address is wrong or whatever

I think we can safely assume that you will not get any reminder this year, as if you haven't had it by now, it will never come and they never send out more than 1.
  • So it will be interesting to see what happens.

I have decided not to declare it sorn. The car cant be linked to me in any way.

I think the reason the reminder never came is because the owner has left the country never to return and maybe changed his registered address before he went.

apart from when you are driving ,you mean?
so you have no intention of registering it in your name?

Why don't you claim the car as your own? Abandoned vehicles can be claimed by those who want them. You will be getting a car for the cost of a v5 application about £25. It's worth £100 as scrap value alone.

You also can't tax the vehicle unless the registered keeper is a named driver on the insurance policy.

Then again why would someone leave the country without selling their car? Doesn't make sense.
