Tax running out end of Sep not yet got renewal reminder

My cars tax runs out end of this month and I havent got my reminder yet.

How long before the end of the month should you get it?

I have lost my V5C registered keeper form.

How else can I tax it if my reminder doesnt come?

Can I request a another reminder?

Not with no logbook AND no reminder you can't

Better order a replacement logbook quickly.

Generally yes though the DVLA make no guarantees that you will actually get one.

You should order a new logbook anyway. If you were unfortunate enough to get a "producer" ticket from a policeman you'd only have 2 days to produce your logbook+insurance+MOT so it's worth looking after it.

It can take up to two weeks for a new logbook, hence why I'm suggesting you get one now rather than waiting, hoping the reminder comes.

Once you have the logbook the 12 digit "document reference number" can be used to tax your car online.

Reminders are printed 2 months in advance, stored by royal mail and then usually go out to people around the 5th of the month, but they can arrive at anytime up until the end of the month.

If your reminder does not come, then you will need to order a new registration certificate to re-tax, or tax at your local DVLA office and order the replacement then. there is a fee of £25 for the replacement.

  • Thanks all, if it doesnt arrive in next few weeks I will order new logbook.

I have thought of another option to save 25quid.

Can I declare it sorn without log book? Then I get a confirmation of this and next month use that to retax it?

You haven't got a few weeks, you need to order one now as it'll take time to arrive.
You could try ringing the DVLA and telling them you need to letter as soon as possible as you will need that or the log book to sorn it.

They might be able to tell you the long number you need to tax it online though.

You can declare SORN without reg cert using form V890 from direct.gov.uk or Post Office. However you cannot then retax it without the reg cert. So you will need to order one.

Sadly this is not the case. They will not give out the reference number.

If you can live without your car for two weeks then yes wait until a few days before the end of the month, SORN it, order a new logbook, wait two weeks then tax it at a post office.

Don't do it online or you will be waiting another 5 days. Some idiot will tell you that you can drive during those 5 days but this is only true when there is continuous taxation, ie. if you taxed online BEFORE the old one ran out.

Not sure I could live without my car for two weeks though. Pretty sure my boss would be unhappy, "hey boss, I need to work from home for two weeks because I couldn't be bothered to sort out my car tax properly"
