I think that is very reasonable- I would have been happy to pay that!
Some people are never happy- the funny thing is it is probably those who got the bargain who ending marking you down as they actually wanted you to pay them for sending it lol (instead of them pay you!).

  • On the face of it £3.50 for shoes may seem expensive but having sold some before they weigh more than you think. The buyer probably never looked at the postage label and just presumed they'd be a couple of quid. Sometimes if I sell heavier items I put the weight in the description and put something like '... as these are quite heavy at 800g they will cost £XX to send'. It might alert the buyer to look at the label when they arrive and realise the postage was fair/correct.
  • I posted something that cost £1.95 postage plus the packaging. I charged £1.75 to the customer. They gave me a low star, so I have a (1) on my postage and packaging now, the dsr is still 4.85. - I asked ebay if this could be removed because it was unfair, they just said that some customers expectations are different to others! - and it can't be removed.
Anyway some buyers just expect free post I think!

If you charge nothing on postage and work your costs into item price buyers are no longer able to leave anything BUT 5*s.

I though buyers could leave whatever star they want ?

Not any more. 5 stars for free postage.
  • I would write on your item description every time

"postage cost is calculated using the royal mail postage calculator, to which an additional amount is added to cover costs of packaging/bubble wrap etc"

Then people can't whinge about it!

Still won't stop them complaining if they think you are buying gold-plated packaging materials. The best way to do this is to make sure you keep charges to an absolute minimum or charge costs to the item price.

It's better all ways round not to try and self-justify on listings, it makes you look petty and as if you are trying too hard to improve your ratings without actually doing anything productive for the buyer.

The auto-5*s is a new thing.

Oh, but they will! Some people just can not be pleased.

I sold something yesterday and charged £1.75 for 1st class. It was something quite delicate and used a LOT of bubble wrap to keep it protected. Anyway, when I got to the PO it turned out to be £2.50 (ish) for 1st and £1.95 for 2nd class. I sent it 2nd class and have emailed the buyer to explain. I'm fully expecting him to complain / mark down my stars to be honest..... I'm wondering now if I should have just sent it first class and took the loss but I made a loss on it anyway, even sending it 2nd class and the buyer got a bargain with the item itself so fingers crossed he won't mind. He did say it was for a Christmas present so hopefully he's not in too much of a rush to receive it!

I agree with this. I mention nothing on my listings about p&p. People can see what I'm charging and I hope most people are intelligent enough to realise the price is fair and includes the cost of the packaging materials too!
