Is this an excessive P&P cost?

I sold a pair of new shoes, originally costing £25, for £3.99 & charged £3.50 P&P made up as
£3.10 for second class recorded delivery
plus 40p for bubble wrap, tissue, 3 thicknesses of brown paper, parcel tape & string.
The written feedback was very positive but my P&P stars have dropped from 4.9 to 4.7 which suggests that the buyer thought the cost was excessive.
The £3.10 is a fixed rate, & was printed on the posting label. I had to buy the packing materials & although I have not costed it out precisely, I certainly did not make a profit on the packing.
I realise it's water under the bridge , but any ideas on how I could have posted more cheaply and been able to track the item? (I do not have access to free packing materials.) Or is the buyer 's expectation unrealistic?

None I'm afraid, I only popped in to say if I received a package with £3.10 on it and I paid £3.50, I'd be delighted.
Chin up, there's some right funny folk about.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
That's a shame as it doesn't seem excessive at all.
Maybe try just stamp cost or just under and see whether that makes a difference.
I seldom bother to check this kind of thing and although I try to charge stamp cost only or even undercut that, it's very difficult to please all the people all the time.
Maybe experiment with inclusive postage now we've got the automatic 5* ratings. I think I'll be doing that in the future."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

Is it possible to print off postage without the price showing up? Some people just take them hump if you charge a penny more than cost, very unreasonable attitude.I'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!0

i undercharged on postage on on something.. it cost 2.98 and i said 2.50 so cost me 48p and they still complained

What did they say? And were they able to see that you actually paid £2.98?I'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!0

I too would be delighted to pay £3.50 for your parcel!
Some buyers are so silly though - I post all my stuff the same day it is paid for now, and send a message
to say it's on the way - and yet my dispatch stars are still 4.7.
Buyers blame you for the time it take RM to get it there....I would imagine that your buyer is of a similar
ilk - that they begrudge paying RM to deliver, so they mark you down on your stars...!Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??:mad:Debt Free as of September 2011 :jSealed Pot 2009 number 334 - £100 Saved! yey!!Sealed Pot 2010 number 334 - £116.51 Saved! Yey!! YIPPEE!!0 -
Thank you all for cheering me up!
I've looked at the buyer's feedback & she is just that, a buyer rather than a seller, which goes some way towards explaining her unrealistic expectations.
I'll look seriously at all inclusive costs next time I get the E-Bay bug, def seems the way to go!I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -

I wouldnt think thats excessive, i normally think up to about 60p is reasonable possibly £1 depending what its sent in. i recently paid £8 for postage and it cost seller £4 to post, i didnt know how much item would cost to post as its a bit of an odd item that could weigh various weights now i do think £4 over the top is excessive and warrants low stars.0
