    have replied to your Pm.
thanks john, my mortgage details are as follows.

    mortgage, balance currently at £42,500.

my mortgage is currently at £345 pm, but with help from DWP, i'm paying £113.00 pm.

today they say the DWP has dropped my payment help.

PS: i didn't think the recent changes would affect me as my interest rate is 2.5%.

    thanks again.

this wouldnt work,i`m not going into all the details but trust me its unworkable

I concur. Such a system would rely on customers telling DWP each and every time their interest rate changes. From my experience, 1990-1992, most customers just didn't bother, leading to massive over and underpayments. The staffing resource required would be completely impractical in a department which is seeing it's headcount shrink. And I'm against time-limiting help with SMI payments, when those on HB/LHA get their assistance paid without limit of time.

As to limiting help to those with homes judged to be too large for their requirements, there's a staffing resource required for that too. And most mortgage section DM's are running to stand still at the moment, so that's not a goer either.

As to why the mail isn't arriving ... that's really puzzling. Because any change which the benefit computer system actions automatically, or which requires a user input, generates a letter giving a breakdown of entitlements. But the letters don't have "MORTGAGE CHANGE" in huge bold letters, it'll be the usual format with no special wording. Isn't it possible some of you have received it, considered it unimportant and just slung it to one side ?

  • I only found out today with a statement from my lender, notice payments changed - phoned DWP - they stated it was well known and I had been told - no my arrears are worse and I have to find another 120 per month on IS!
  • Hi all,

I have read most of your messages, as I have not been feeling very well for a few months and with a problem relating to my back, that has been troubling me since 2003/2004. It started geting bad for the last four months being in so much pain and I finding it hard to walk and stand for long. I have been adviced by a work coleague to claim disability benefit which I am in the process of doing.

I work full time and have been of the last 8 weeks, trying to return next week, but I don't think I will last as the job is very stressful, hence why my problem has also returned with a vengence. I was thinking if there is a way I can recieve help and support to have my morgage interest paid without any time limit as I may not be able to return to employment if my condition does get worse.
One thing i would not want to lose my home.

    I really need advice quick.

Not in my case ... I open and read any letters from DWP very carefully and file them all. I still haven't received a letter but I haven't contacted them yet. Payment is due to be paid to my lender around 17th Dec so will contact the lender to see what they have paid in this time.
  • I have read through this thread to the best of my abilities. (I am on quite strong painkillers - so my brain's a bit fuddled today!) Am I right in assuming that ANYONE who gets SMI is affected, or is it just JSA/IS claimants?

I am receiving ESA/IS and have been since September 2008. I worked full time for all of my adult life and have never needed to claim any benefits until then. It doesn't sit well with me to live on benefits, but at least for the forseeable future , I have no choice.

I have not received any notification from DWP with regards to a change in payments.

However, my current mortgage deal is about to end its fixed rate. I contacted my lender (Cheltenham & Gloucester) and they are well aware of my circumstances.(i.e. That it is extremely unlikely that I will ever be fit enough to work again.) They offered me a choice of 3 alternative new deals, the one I chose means that even if DMP change to their "blanket" rate - my mortgage will be overpaid. (Which I don't think is fair that many people will have a shortfall.)

I am in my 50's and have been with C&G for 16 years (10 years in one house and 6 in this one.) My mortgage is equal to 60% of the value of the house and from the beginning has been on an interest only arrangement. My payment and credit history is squeaky clean, so I don't know if that is a factor.

I think it may be worth contacting your mortgage provider to see if they can offer you a cheaper deal - it costs nowt to ask. My new payment will be under £200, so it wouldn't make sense for me to trade down to renting. I doubt I could rent a bedsit for that!

Just thought I'd update... still waiting for that "illusive" letter to arrive from DWP informing me that my SMI payments have been reduced significantly - since 01/10/10.

Thankfully I read these forums, and had planned ahead for the shortfall, but, as I've said before, that's no good for the people who don't know.

I dread to think what letters the Halifax would have sent in this time...
  • Evening everyone just would like to check something regarding the mortgage interest support as i have only just be able to apply for this, i have been on esa since the 5th of August 2010.

1.Do they back dated the payment to the 5th August or is it from the 13th week.

Payment would only be made from Week 13. However, you will need to demonstrate good reason why you did not apply then. Backdating will not be granted automatically.
    Gone ... or have I?
