Another vote for Avast. I have been using it for about 3 years now. Asking for a new code each year is a tiny price to pay. It is also light on resources. Sometimes it slightly delays the opening of files or programs while it checks them but that's its job.
Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!

Ive used the following anti virus:

    avast
    avira
avg (used to use but it was getting a bit power hungry so get rid and replaced with avria then replaced that with avast)

    - firewalls

comodo (found it was getting a bit power hungry but that would have been the extra programs that were running in conjunction with the firewall(i think you can choose not to run these though) so replaced with online armor)
    pc tools
    online armor

    - spyware

    super antispyware

    - malware

    malarebytes

    adware

    - adaware (used it for a few years but got rid as it was getting a bit power hungry)

and for good measure i used ccleaner and windows defender

any of the programs ive put in italics i would use on other machines and would recommend them but you must use the programs on a regular basis and keep them updated

Save yourself the hassle and use a secure operating system instead.

    Linux FTW. ;)

    I use

Avira antivirus (it is better than avast and uses less resources),
PCTools Firewall Pro which comes with Threatfire (for rootkits etc),
Superantispyware (best free antispyware atm), and
Winpatrol (edit start up items that slow boot and protects from nasties that try to start atboot)

    Never had any problems.

I've just bought a PC and need to erm...protect it. A friend recommends Mcafee Security Suite (24.99 in PC World). Is that the best option? Also, is that all you pay or is there a subscription for online updates?

yes you dont want to be catching a virus. :rotfl:
