I need a condom for my PC....

I've just bought a PC and need to erm...protect it. A friend recommends Mcafee Security Suite (24.99 in PC World). Is that the best option? Also, is that all you pay or is there a subscription for online updates?

I use all free computer protection. I'm not talking used condoms either.

    AVG Anti virus (free addition)
    Windows Defender (anti spyware)
    Zone Alarm firewall.

I also have CCleaner, Spybot and Ad-aware.

These are all free and I never had any major problems. :)

I reccomend Avast and also Windows Defender Beta (google it) for a firewall as well as the Windows XP Firewall.

You will find McAfee and Symantec/Norton similar prices. The £25 will be for the product and a years subscription to updates.

    Just to clarify ....

    NO! It's not a firewall.

    1. The Windoze firewall is next to useless and ...

    2. NEVER use more than one firewall at any one time (same thing goes for antivirus programs).

Another handy little guide to all the basic protection you will need (with links to free programs) ...

..........unless they are a software one on your computer and a hardware one such as in a router. ;) - the best combination.

    Agreed what he said.

Mick ... my comments assume you have just the one stand alone computer with no router but just plugged straight into your phone line.

So presumably you want a similar level of protection (anti-virus, firewall, malware etc.) on your new laptop as you already have on your desktop.

  • Give Comodo Firewall (completely free!) a try, although you might get fed up with all the windows. Avast is my choice for antivirus protection.
