Bald tyres on a written off car.

  • To drive with bald tyres is madness (I'm sure that's been well established).

How much is the car worth? If it's not a very expensive car and the insurance claim doesn't state it went off the road due to bald tyres it may not get inspected and you may get a payout

    UPDATE.....

Much to everyone's surprise the insurance have paid out no questions asked, all we can conclude is that the tyres were not actually illegal, just very close or the insurers did not look.

The insurers first offer was accepted no questions asked.

Insurers are far less likely to check the post-accident condition of a car where the Insured is mature. If the Insured was a boy racer/young driver then you can bet the car would be scrutinised....

even a 7 year old can check whether tyres need replaced or not.... there's no excuse for not checking them.;)

Might be a tree in the way next time the car loses it on a wet road with no rubber to grip. Is it worth it?

How to take the 20p test
Tyre tread depth should be checked at least once a month at the same time that you check your tyre pressures.
A 20p coin provides a useful alternative to a calibrated tread depth gauge.
Insert the 20p coin into the main tyre grooves at several places around the circumference of the tyre and across its width.
If the outer band of the 20p coin is visible whenever you insert it into the grooves, your tread depth may be illegal and you should have them checked by a qualified tyre specialist.
When checking your tread depth, give the rest of the tyres a visual inspection for any cuts or bulges and remove any stones or objects embedded in the tread.

Some loss adjusters would try and make an issue of the bald tyre issue, some won't, it is highly likely that they where just borderline.

Though I remember back in the early 80's one of my dads workmates crashed his Capri, when he got it pulled out he noticed that the rear tyres where borderline, he took it to the tyre shop and put on two new ones, then drove up a few farm tracks, to put some "age" into them and then took it to the garage to get an estimate.

The funny thing is he was an Insurance agent for a large insurance company, back in the days when they went to your house to collect premiums and try to sell you more insurance etc.

Fit some part worn's and they'll be none the wiser.

From my memory Capri’s in the wet, they had a tendency to head backwards into the scenery even with good tyres, particularly the V6 ones

Indeed they did, this one was a 1.6 Laser, i believe he later sold it for a Manta GTE, for the "improved handling", lol.
