On what basis, are bigger businessess able to?

    Connaught for example.

Oh come on, Thrug. It's obvious. Big business operates in a different economy to small business, and are not subjected to the same economic forces.

Didn't you know there is a magic money tree that big business has private access to. Shhhhhh . don't tell the small guys.

Next you'll be revealing your ignorance by suggesting you didn't know that tall people have access to different breathing air than the shorties.

Nobody in the real pub anymore, you can't smoke and it is too expensive  although to be fair my local in town seems to have got it right and becoming more popular:beer:

    No, you've lost me.

Can you rephrase that in English, please?

You haven't just returned from a holiday at MSE's majesty's pleasure?

My sincere apologies. I thought you got sent down for expressing an opinion or something.

    Mea culpa.

    Er...no. I moved house.

Astonishingly, even for regulars such as myself, real life occasionally intervenes and actually takes priority over mse.

Maybe you should get out more?

I would, but outside frightens me. It's full of people. Some of them are fat.

Oh the horror of having to witness it.

I'm not in total agreement with that. I'd say that bigger drivers of salary are the type of job role and the type of industry than the size of business. If you model the type of businesses paying 2x or 3x the national average, then they tend to be smaller, in knowledge-based or niche industries. The extremely high (CEO/banker) level salaries do tend to be the domain of larger, internationally competitive companies though.

Very large companies, be they Tesco or HSBC, have large numbers of poorer paid staff that bring the average salary bill down, smaller firms don't. If you want to look for firms paying really high average salaries, don't look to banks or big companies, look at nimble PE players or specialists in the oil industry, for example.

well you hear people on here banging on about how raising the minimum wage would effect small businesses the hardest. if that is the case it implies bigger business can afford higher salaries.

the kneejerk reaction is to protect smaller businesses but i don't think they should be protected at all costs.

some of the worst abuses of employees i've come across have been carried out by SMEs (making people work cash in hand on a no contract basis, changing job description or hours or rate with no notice, expecting people to cover the insurance for driving the company vehicles with their own car's fully comp insurance). that and agency work, which is the way big firms get around their responsibilities.

Sadly though in general small business create jobs and big businesses reduce head counts with efficiency savings (and yes this can go on indefinitely as growing small businesses are taken over by big ones who then cut jobs to increase margins)
