Correct Wireless Router?

Wanting to go wireless with my ADSL broadband from Virgin for the first time, I ordered Virgin's wireless kit. Shown on the Virgin website and on the order confirmation is the ubiquitous DG834G.
The package arrived this morning and the delivery note is still saying DG834GSP (I suppose the SP stands for starter pack) ... but the kit they have sent me is in fact a D-Link DSL-2640R Broadband Wireless G ADSL2+ Router.
Is this D-Link model at least as good as, or even better than, the DG834G or have I been ripped off? I haven't attempted to unpack or install it yet in case it needs to go back.

I'm not on cable. This is intended to go wireless with my existing ADSL service. The D-Link router they've sent is clearly an ADSL one with an ADSL socket on the back to connect to my phone line via a filter, so to that extent it would appear I have the right technology ... I just want to know if the D-Link will be as good as the DG834G I thought I'd be getting.... You don't need to buy from Virgin. Any ADSL wireless router is suitable e.g. any of these here. Different users will say that certain makes are better than others but the choice is yours.TwistedPsycho wrote: »Surely if you are going onto Virmin's Cable Broadband you need a modem dsl a DSL router instead of an ADSL router?
Surely you should read before posting! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Looking into the D-link, it states it has a 1Mb/s upload limit. So id assume it would be no good for streaming content if thats what you might do:idea:0

Thanks for that info RIK. Fortunately that won't be a requirement for me

Apologies oh coffee-like perfectionist. I misread the OP to read "I am moving from ADSL to Virgin", everyone makes mistakes and maybe you should appreciate that before making such comments.
I know how to use bold too, do I get a gold star teacher?
PS Sorry OP, I won't bother offering a structured comparison of the two models if I have to receive responses like that. I will ahve to recommend searching the model numbers yourself via Google.Signaller, author, father, carer.0 -

The 1mbps upstream is normal for ADSL 2+ this would mean you upload at 100kb/sec.
I have the N version of this router and have no issues at all with streaming from any source, be it Iplayer, ITV Player or any other site.
Should be fine with this router. :beer:0 -

What about HD content?:idea:0 -
What about HD content?
Shouldnt be an issue. What speeds do you get?
I comfortably stream HD content on my ADSL2+ service, alas i am priviledged to live near the exchange so get v.good speeds, D:16mbps/U:1mbps.
The upstream would be faster if i went with a different provider who offered 2.5mbps but i have no issues streaming Iplayer HD.
What do you use the ADSL for?0 -
Did you ask for a free one?
sp is dg834G with different firmware, the one you have should work just as well!!
