Did you ask for a free one?

sp is dg834G with different firmware, the one you have should work just as well

I gave up trying to contact Virgin so ended up being very un-MSE and paid for one instead.

I'm pleased to report that the installation to my Dell laptop has gone like a dream and I'm getting excellent coverage all around my home and outside. I'm happy.

I do hope that you have securely encrypted your new wireless network with a long random key? e.g. from here Copy & paste the key from a notepad file.

Shouldnt be an issue. What speeds do you get?

I comfortably stream HD content on my ADSL2+ service, alas i am priviledged to live near the exchange so get v.good speeds, D:16mbps/U:1mbps.

The upstream would be faster if i went with a different provider who offered 2.5mbps but i have no issues streaming Iplayer HD.

What do you use the ADSL for?

    I think youve misunderstood
I was talking about taking content off one pc and streaming to another (or a PS3 or whatever) so the UPLOAD of the routers used, not the download

And changed the network SSID and login username/password from defaults?

As a bit of a D-Link buff, I can honestly say the 2640R is a pile of poo. Inferior chipset and firmware, and then probably got ISP-frigged firmware on top :(

If you had a 2640B then you would be ok (I have 4 of them, they suit my line really well, better than the 834GT and so I wanted a couple spare, okay ??!!?).

Better all round, and the same broadcom 6348 chipset as the netgear dg834gt.

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Yes indeedy. I may be new to all this wireless trickery, but I did some essential homework before I installed the wee beasty. I'm not quite as green as I'm cabbage looking as my old mum would say :p:p

    Well, perhaps I am. :rotfl:

I've just spotted something of interest that is beyond my limited learning curve at the moment. When I detect some of the local wi-fi signals around here, some display security as WPA-PSK as indeed does mine ... but I've noticed that some display WPA2-PSK which I assume is better.

Why would my mostly automated install have chosen WPA-PSK ... is it a limitation of my hardware or Virgin ADSL ... and what would I have to do to uprate it if indeed it is capable of being uprated?

The 1Mbps in the specs relates to the ADSL performance (i.e. it won't support annex M). It's very unlikely that you'd want to stream anything across the ADSL link (especially a Virgin National ADSL link) so it's the ethernet and WiFi performance that is important for streaming within your own network and there is no upstream/downstream divide because the speeds are the same whichever the direction of travel is.

Regarding the question - if you bought a DG834 and they sent something different return it. If you just bought a wireless router then they've sent one. Distance selling regulations mean you can return it anyway if you don't like it.

Yes you can change the encryption to WPA2 which is more secure. Should be a dropdown on the wireless settings page of the router where you entered the passphrase/key etc.
