  • It's a 1.8 petrol engine. Thanks for the above walkthrough! I'll have a good look through it. Is it difficult? I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to cars!

Nah...not much to go wrong although my guide was for the diesel :D
  • I'm about to clean my EGR valve out, for the first time, as my car is smoking quite a bit and there's also 'hesitation' at higher speeds.

The EGR cleaning info that has been provided is very useful but can you tell me if I need a torque wrench for the bolts for the EGR valve and exhaust manifold? if so, what are the settings?

    Thanks

No you don't need a torque wrench, just tighten them up well but not mentally hanging off a breaker bar with a scaff pole on :D:D.

There will be torque settings somewhere but "tight" is sufficient.
  • OK. Thank you Hammyman.
  • Dont Know If It Helps But I Cleaned Out My EGR Earlier In The Week And It Made No Difference To The Smoking & Hesitation. But Today I've Just Disconnected The EGR Valve By Taking The Vacuum Pipe Off The Valve & Just Kinking It Over. It Confirmed The EGR Valve Was At Fault But It Didnt Bring No Warning Lights On & I Believe The Engine Was Running So Much Smoother On My Journey This Evening. Such As Massive Reduction In Smoke & No Hesitation. Cant Really Afford £206 For A New Valve!!!
Hope This Helps Anyone Who Aint Sure Weather The EGR Is At Fault Or Not..

That Must Take A Lot More Effort To Type Capitalising Every Word!

Seriously though, the offical bodge is to blank off the EGR valve with a peice of steel, some bolts and some hylomar. It's really not recomended on modern diesels though.

I Heard About The "Bodge" But I Thought There Aint No Point In Taking It All Apart Again If The EGR Wasnt At Fault.

As For The Capitalising Thats Just A Habbit!! :)

  • Hi Loonyknownothing,

True, I don't know if my car's EGR valve is at fault but I'll clean it out first and see how it goes.

Did you renew any gaskets? is it really necessary?

I called up a Ford dealership for these but they did not have them in stock.

    Regards.

All I'll say about the EGR valve is this: Most people on the MEG group advocate disabling it.

Should still pass an MOT OK.
