bumped my head

Morning all

Not sure if right place to post so please feel free to move it to the correct board.

Yesterday I walked out of sainsburys with a few bags of shopping. As I left the front of the store I was looking in front of me at the road to see if it was ok to cross. the the next thing I know "bang". I had hit my head really hard on a sign they have outside the store.
The sign is warning road users to look out for pedestrians. (Oh the irony)
Its facing sideways from the shop and I hit my head on the corner of it as it was pointing out infront of me.
So I fell, dropped my shopping in a puddle. My OH was in the car waiting for me and saw it all. He rushed over picked me up and walked me back to the car, wet shopping and all.
I felt sick all day and today my head feels very bruised. It didnt bleed and there is no obvious visible injury so I didnt bother going to A&E or anything. And tomorrow is my B'day and we were supposed to be taking my little girl to the zoo for the first time but I just cant manage it with the stinking headache Ive got.

But I wanted to let Sainsburys know about the sign. Im a 26 Yr old heathly female with good eyesight. Im just thinking it could have been a lot worse if it was a more vulnerable person.

any advice how I would go about this complaint? thank you for reading
Happy days

  • You should really have gone to A&E or your Doctors as you could well have had concussion (that is not intended in an offensive manner :)).

As it is, personally I'd write a letter addressed to the manager of the store, advising them of what happened and why. You may get a bunch of flowers and some vouchers as a gesture of goodwill, and they'll probably move the sign.

Do you think the sign is badly placed? Write them a letter saying so.
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

  • At the risk of sounding controversial you should probably look where you are going in future.

I struggle to see how it could be Sainsbury's fault you walk into a large inanimate object.

Quite, however OP's point was that anyone who is visually impaired could possibly injure themselves on this sign.

OP I'd call into the store, have a word with customer services and explain your concerns. Ive always found Sainsburys to be good like that.

    Hope you're feeling better.

Anyone that was visually impaired could hurt themselves on a glass door, on a refridgerator or on the checkout.

The OP wasn't visually impaired, just careless.

If a visually impaired person had injured themselves on it I am sure something would have been done by now.

If they could hit themselves on that sign, surely they can hit themselves on any sign? A sign cannot be fully visible from every angle!
    Gone ... or have I?

Signs dont tend to be at head height though do they? They are higher. Road signs are towards the kerb where a pedestrian wouldn't be walking. There are few signs it would be possible to walk head first into.

Your argument about doors, refrigerators and checkouts is a bit of a non starter. A blind/visually impaired person would expect to find these yet a signpost at head height right in front of an exit is a bit of a rarity.

And OP never stated she was visually impared. Please re read her OP where she states that

  • sorry to cause so much controvosy. I know It was my own fault for trying to look at what was coming in the road and not at whats at head level.
Its just he sign I feel is in a very poor place. It cant be seen very well and the pointy corner is right at head level. Well for me anyway. I just wanted to let them know just for future reference thats all. thank you

Very valid point, which makes me think that the OP was crossing at the exit to the carpark, where one could reasonably assume there to be signs for cars. This is how it is at my local Sainsbury's.

I think if Sainsbury's had a visually impaired person have an accident on it they would move it.

    should have gone to Specsavers....lol...sorry...

seriously though, if you are genuinely concerned about others you should have brought it to the attention of the store immediately and similarly if you are concerned about your own distress/injury, I would have taken a photo of the object on my mobile phone, clearly showing its position and location, then went into the store to complain/ advise them.
    I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j
