We live around a 100 miles away from all our relatives. Some are down South, some are up North. Used to have some 400 miles away up in Scotland but they died early deaths... as is usual up there. :D

The little Toonies and I live about a two and three quarter hour drive from my elderly father, my mother has sadly passed, and I am an only child. To be honest it works for us, I moved away from home over 20 years ago now for work purposes, also, with the advances in technology, we have much better forms of contact than previously.

MIL lives in Turkey, my mum lives in Australia and my dad lives in Israel.

Very far away and very spread out...

Not sure if it's good or bad - spose you miss out on a lot, but it is what it is....

  • I live 200 miles from my family and I hate it. I worry about what will happen when they get older etc. So I do plan to move back.
MSE aim: more thanks than posts :j
  • We did think about living somewhere inbetween but the main reason we dont like where we live at the moment is that we feel quite alone in terms of having family support.

My family arent a very close knit family where as OHs are and I think that will be important to us when we have kids and its important to us to be around for OHs siblings kids.

I do worry about my parents needing more help when they are older but my other siblings will still be nearby and I could get there quickly if need be.
  • I live about 150 miles away from my Mum & Stepdad, I was born close to where they live now & my Mum decided to move back to be closer to my Nan now that she's older & needs her more. They moved in February & i'm going to visit for the first time this month!

My Dad only lives a few miles away & I wouldn't move in case he needs me later on in life, we're very close.

My Brother is in the Army & lives in Germany.

I'm about 250 miles from my mum, who doesn't drive. There's no room for us to go visit her so she comes up here but now only about 3 times a year. When my lads were smaller she came 4 or 5 times, stays about a week each time so got quality time with them rather than frequent short visits. we also used to try to meet half way at an aunts house too. My boys were only 7 and 5 when their dad left me and that was hard having no family around (they did/do still see him but he was an hours drive away so it all fell to me for the day to day stuff). My mum now is very immersed in her church and doesn't have a lot of time for much else so even though we dont see each other much she seems to have no interest which is quite sad at times

Just as you are thinking it may be difficult to move away, after almost 25 years away (200+ to now just 50 miles away) I could never move back to be near my parents, neither could my wife who is 230 miles away from her mum and sister.

    We like life without them.
