I hope you're not talking about me RIK, I've done everything you've said so far and its not easy for someone my age to understand all this gobblegook that you guys take for granted.

Determined not to be left behind by all you wiz kids, and at the age of 67 (that was 8 years ago) I went back to college and sat for and passed

‘City and Guilds Information Technology’. :T

This is fine for understanding how to use WORD, EXCELL etc.
But the inner workings of the computer remain a mystery. But I’m willing to learn and that’s why I keep returning to this site where I continue to get fantastic help from people like ‘alienrik’ and others.
All of you guys who put yourselves out for others are very much appreciated. So no more talk of giving up Please.

And anyway RIK what are you doing here?
You’re supposed to be helping me.
The sooner you get me sorted the better, or people will think we're going steady.

    :rotfl:

I'm sure at 67 you are not using Limewire.....are you? :D

Have you considered going back to college?. :rotfl:

Anyway, Whats a Limewire? But then if I haven't heard of it I'm not likely to have one. From what I've read about it here today I don't think I'll bother but thanks for the thought.
Trying to learn something new every day.

IN recent weeks I've seen 2 DRIVERS using their laptops whilst sitting in traffic, and I don't do much driving during the working day.

What is the harm in that? As long as they are careful not to spill their coffee on the keyboard?
    :):)
    (I'll get my coat....)

It also interferes with their texting! :rotfl:

And if it's pron, I demand the right to have a look.

One was a young (ish) mum, :D 2 kids in the back, 5.30pm traffic, turning left at lights, into a restricted access, pedestrian biased, very narrow and busy street.
Gandy Street to be exact, for those familiar. ;)

The other was a guy in a Vivaro, again at lights, still tapping away after the lights had gone green.

Have you considered going back to college?. :rotfl:;)
That's the trouble wiv da youf, they need calculators :D for the simplest sums.

Oldbiggles and Richie, twins but separated at birth? :p

    What are the chances?

And 'Rik, I think your post echoed mine re the compulsion to install toolbars and those little registry 'clean up' tools.
    Move along, nothing to see.

So you make your living from the technically incompetent and then moan that they are idiots.

The 'how to treat your pc' is usually in the manual - RTFM (read the f***ing manual)

If they weren't you would either have to do something else for a living which would proibably pay less and is an option open to you anyway or go grubbing in bins for partially eaten burgers.

Nothing wrong with half-eaten burgers imho, it's freecycling and it fed me through university

Now given those options do you still want to whine about your customers?

Yes, learn from your mistakes and RTFM

  • Had to clean out a few 'clogged' PCs in my time too, including one from a heavy smoker where the psu fan was jammed solid due to the amount of sticky dust clogging it up (it was the only fan in the system apart from the cpu fan).

    There's a few ventclogging horror pictures here - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/11/13/ventblockers/
  • Nothing worse( and thats why ive stopped building pcs for people) than the phone call as mentioned my pc is slow or this keeps popping up 2 weeks after building a new pc for some one..
In this day and age people should really never loose data..
There are online storage sites, external HDs (very cheap now) USB sticks..DVDrs...
Had loads of recent problems with older pcs and newer ones ..with virus malware etc , some really nasty ones too...
Really cant get the message to people to run up to date anti virus and regular maware checkers...they are all free too...
So much easier just building your own pc...took me few years to get the message :)
