There is a difference - you don't do it for a living so far as I know.

Absolutely true. Just posting my personal frustrations

IN recent weeks I've seen 2 DRIVERS using their laptops whilst sitting in traffic, and I don't do much driving during the working day.

What is the harm in that? As long as they are careful not to spill their coffee on the keyboard?
    :):)
    (I'll get my coat....)

Did they have a big camera on the roof and Google emblazoned front and back?

Must admit that while n my commute (80 miles round trip, between 0500-0700, 1200-1400 or 1900-2100) I see many strange things, including what you mention, as well as people who somehow mount their laptops like a mobile phone, albeit somehow attached to the passenger side dash storage (I know there is a name for it.... can not think what it is right now - been a long shift already!).

Quite why they need a Laptop for the drive home is beyond me!

When I lived in Azerbaijan this was popular with the local taxi drivers so they could watch DVDs while driving round the place, some even mounted them down near the gearstick on the front control pedistal....

Probably why I used to see so many of them on their roofs / firmly embedded in the back of the truck in front / perched precariously on top of a low crumbling wall that separated the carriageway from a 50ft sheer cliff drop :T

When you ask if they have a backup and they do not then it is ££££ time.
Tell them it may be possible to recover their data but it is pricey. Also ask them for their original windows disk, as a reinstall might be necessary. When they look at you with 'what the hell is this guy talking about' look then more ££££ . Don't rip them off but a little scare normally makes them more responsible so on your next visit they will proudly tell you that they have backed up and found their windows disk.

I have a flat rate of £30 for an OS install so its not too expensive.

A friend of mine has just had his "backup" hard drive die (posted in another thread). Turns out it was nearly 10 years old. Lots of important information on there and I can't get it off. BIOS even reports that SMART says its duff on POST and I've never seen that. To get the data back is going to be between £350 and £550+VAT.

Its funny how all this information is important to them yet they can't spend a few quid on DVDRs...

fixed one yesterday for a friend who were smokers , know what you mean !!

was more shocked by the line when I went back "we take it to Pcworld every year for a check up" as the fans/processor were almost TOTALLY blocked with dust ( and their house is not dirty) , I suspect little or nohing was done each year during the so called health check

and yes, it had all their photo's on and no back-ups but now done for them and the PC back up running ( and yes it was limewire on there)

These are the worst PC's to deal with in my experience. They absolutely STINK.

Hammyman, with your attitude you should not be working with IT home users. People are paying you for a service, if you don't like performing that service then you are in the wrong profession really aren't you.

It is not, and has never been breaking news that most home users are stupid/negligent/unaware of what they need to do. Such is the nature of the IT beast.

Not sure why so many are taking the OP so seriously.
His post is clearly tongue-in-cheek and he is clearly conscientious in his work.
With him you have a choice. You can have someone who will have a good moan at you, but not charge for the extra work or have someone who will do the work, say nothing and charge you more for the cleaning etc.
isabel.h obviously doesn't like to be told anything, so she's an obvious candidate for PC World. :)

#11 your avin a bad day, have a beer or two
#18 most people don't have full workshop facilities, and certainly do not strip clean [ de gunge ] every machine, Hammyman does

All in all Hammyman appears to do a good job, had a bit of a rant [ don't we all sometimes ] perhaps we should cut him a bit of slack folks :)

I do get frustrated when I sort people computers out, then they do exactly what I asked them not to (installing dodgy toolbars, downloading from limewire etc).
    And so the cycle continues........

I hope you're not talking about me RIK, I've done everything you've said so far and its not easy for someone my age to understand all this gobblegook that you guys take for granted.

Determined not to be left behind by all you wiz kids, and at the age of 67 (that was 8 years ago) I went back to college and sat for and passed

‘City and Guilds Information Technology’. :T

This is fine for understanding how to use WORD, EXCEL etc.
But the inner workings of the computer remain a mystery. But I’m willing to learn and that’s why I keep returning to this site where I continue to get fantastic help from people like ‘alienrik’ and others.
All of you guys who put yourselves out for others are very much appreciated. So no more talk of giving up Please.

Trying to learn something new every day.
