Not sure what motherboard you have, get Cpu-z and see what that says about your m/b. Or read the actual board.
If this is your m/b - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c00916910#N929 then it can support E1XXX Celeron dual-core
E2xxx Pentium dual-core
E4XXX Core2 duo
E6XXX Core2 duo -upto E6700
Basically any conroe core processor .0 -

So which program was maxing out your CPU? If you click on Processes, then CPU the culprit should be at the top of the list.
AVG Removal Tool
AVAST 5
Il have a look next time its like that and post back, in the meantime i removed AVG and installed avast 5, but im not sure if its just a 30 day trial.0 -

Well you can use this chart to see how the cpu is rated - http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
I've looked at cex - http://uk.webuy.com/product.php?page=2&stext=§ion=all&rad_which_stock=2&catid=911
These are free del an 12 month guarantee, not bad prices but del can be 1-5 weeks! If they have any local to you it's best pickup.
They are listing E6600 which scores 1502 on that chart at £40 -probably as high as you will get. E4600 AT £35 isn't bad.E2180/2200 @ £25/30
Found this - http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/motherboards-bios-cpu/396092-cpu-upgrade-asus-ipilp-ar.html
The gist is you can have 800 + 1066 fsb and 65nm ,conroe, cpu. Some cpu have come out since your pc was made eg celeron e1200/1400 which "should" work. The highest listed e6700 is on ebay now http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Intel-Core-2-E6700-Used-incl-Heatsink-Fan-New-/300467059336?pt=UK_Motherboards_CPUs&hash=item45f53b7a88 you might get for under 40 all in?
but don't confuse with new 45nm pentium dual core e6700
Did you try and find out what was hogging your cpu -use task manager??0 -

that second one E6700 on ebay seems to be a good bet, would this just be a straight swap over or would it put more demands on other components?
Ever since removing AVG my computer hasn't really slowed down like it did before so possibly it was that, if it does again il check the CPU usage and see whos the culprit.
Thanks for the help

You could put e6700 straight in -you'd need to re-apply some thermal paste tho' the one on ebay should have it pre-applied to the heat-sink as in the bottom photo.
No strain at all on anything else.0 -

oh well il play the waiting game!0 -
Did you install windows7 on your old/existing machine? -assuming you sensibly bought a RETAIL (ie transferrable) license worth a clean install with that to start afresh and you'll likely find you don't need to upgrade any hardware.....0
