If Bean Counter can't remove stuff from winblows what purpose other than hijacking a thread do Linux phanbhoys have posting here. If Bean Counter can't manage a PnP O/S what [ other than the usual evangelical spoiler ] makes you think s/he can manage Linux ?

Why don't you answer the question asked, and not the question you wish was asked ?

The O/P's question was "" How to uninstall everything and just reinstall the basics ""

mainly because the newbie friendly versions of linux, as stated Ubuntu and Linux Mint, come with everything you are likely to need, if its only going to be used for the internet what do you ACTUALLY need? a browser and some of the codecs required to partake in the websites such as flash
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

What makes you think they can't, the OP asked for advice and thats what they got, at no time did the OP say they couldn't do what they wanted to do.

I think anyone can manage linux what with it being a PnP OS as well.

How to uninstall everything and just install the basics: could mean windows or linux as installing linux is uninstalling everything and just installing the basics. Actual question answered as there was no windows specific answer specified.

Oh don't be so ignorant. You very well know that the OP is going to be a Windows user.

Grab your drivers first and put them on disc especially for any oddities .
backup copy bookmarks emails videos photos and any other data you require .
Make sure you have the serial number for your windows install .
Put windows CD in the drive and boot to the cd drive follow instructions .

When you get to the install options choose custom click on the drive and format it then continue .

    Easy walk through here

It's p***ing me off. The user doesn't even know how to format and install Windows, so they're suggesting just download Linux.

Again where is it specified the OP can't format and install windows?????

Advice was asked for, not instruction. Advice is based on opinion. So all advice is valid until more information is gained (ie like the OP actually saying they can't format and install windows, in which case formatting and installing is a lot more user friendly to do in linux).

Of course I do they said so in the first post, however they asked for advice, not instruction.
  • It doesn't need to be any more complicated than:

Using the Windows CD, format the hard drive and reinstall Windows
When installed, visit Windows Update and install all of the available updates
Install an anti virus program. Avira, Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials are all free and are rated some of the best
Install your browser; IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera etc..
    Relax

It shouldn't take you more than a couple of hours to have everything sorted, most of it you won't even need to be in front of it to do either.

That's a precise description of the prescriptive approach phanbhoys use when answering a question that was never asked !

    - I have nothing whatsoever against most flavours of linux
    - I never comment in Linux only threads
    - I use linux every day
    - Linux, like Mac's have less virii because very few people in the big round world us it

I do though speak out when phanbhoys give out bad advice on this forum, you know what the question was, you chose to hijack the thread to become a disciple in the hope that other disciples [ like~flies~round~a~jampot ] would join you in preaching, after all you have no one else to talk to, no other conversation, no other interests. If you want to Linux[ise] feel free to do so, it is after all a democracy, but please start your own thread where you can dribble away to your hearts content.
Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I try to be an even-handed poster and accept that you at times may not agree with these opinions or how I choose to express them, this is not my problem. Again and I'll type slowly for you: advice was asked for with no indication it should be only windows based. Had that been the case then linux would have no place in this thread. As it wasn't specified its a perfectly valid form of advice.

I do know the question, so do you it was: "How to uninstall everything and just reinstall the basics"

    it was not:

"How to uninstall everything and just reinstall the basics, I am really thick, can't learn anything new and would like to know windows only solutions"

Which obviously is something similar to what you read. Please show me where it says the OP won't consider or like to hear about other options open to them. Show me where its stated this is a windows only thread. You can't. I believe the OP stated last:

"Can anyone please offer any advice about the best and easiest way to do this?"

any advice no matter how you read it doesn't say windows only advice.

Based on the above facts how is linux bad advice????? Its only bad if you make assumptions and assume the OP is a newbie windows user (assumption being the mother of all !!!!ups), in which case how did they port all their stuff onto the new desktop???

I think you'll find that I didn't bring linux up (I use windows too), I'm no phanbhoy, however will speak out when as soon as linux is mentioned as an actual alternative (which it is) some other phanbhoys decide for the OP its not valid without even consulting the OP.

    Very silly.

    etcetc crap etc.

Because the OP clearly wanted advice on how to format and put a new Windows operating system. Hence why they said Windows. They have said THEY HAVE THE DISCS. So why would anyone even need to mention Linux!?

    Stop twisting the OPs words.
