Windows comes with its own firewall and anti virus does it not?
And to say Linux "doesn't come with any viruses" is one of the most stupid things I have heard! Any operating system can have viruses, it just happens that Windows gets targeted the most.
That is a separate install and utilises a fair bit of RAM. So the Spec of the machine is important.0 -

Firewall yes, that doesn't stop outgoing connections. Antivirus no.And to say Linux "doesn't come with any viruses" is one of the most stupid things I have heard! Any operating system can have viruses, it just happens that Windows gets targeted the most.
No one said there aren't viruses for linux there are, however they dont effect linux how they effect windows. This is worth a read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_malware
It not just that windows is targeted more, its to do with it being easier to execute viruses on windows due to the lack of inbuilt security measures.0 -

Fair enough I was looking at the post you quoted. However despite that the point stands that you're really not going to get a virus in linux, and if some how you managed to you'd have to give it root access for it to do any real damage.
Windows viruses (of which there are vastly more) simply wont run on linux unless you have wine installed and then it only runs in wine.0 -
If Bean Counter can't remove stuff from winblows what purpose other than hijacking a thread do Linux phanbhoys have posting here. If Bean Counter can't manage a PnP O/S what [ other than the usual evangelical spoiler ] makes you think s/he can manage Linux ?
Why don't you answer the question asked, and not the question you wish was asked ?
The O/P's question was "" How to uninstall everything and just reinstall the basics ""Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I try to be an even-handed poster and accept that you at times may not agree with these opinions or how I choose to express them, this is not my problem. look i do not want to start the usual usual 'OS wars' which can go with this type of situation
i am not saying windows is a bad choice,
however i do generally beleive that for a internet only laptop that one of the Linux Distro's such as Ubuntu or Linux Mint would be a better choice, and one of those reasons is that it is more secure (and any non fanboy can agree that for all the numerous reasons that get branded about Linux and MacOS are generally both more secure than windows)Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -

It's p***ing me off. The user doesn't even know how to format and install Windows, so they're suggesting just download Linux.
Noobs I tell you, should be banned from this forum.0 -

- They have the Windows discs READY. No need to download anything.
- They have used Windows before so know the system better than any unix system.
Why would you ever suggest using linux in this situation!?
Given you said that Linux doesn't get any viruses I don't think you should be posting anything!0
