A lemon sponge or lemon drizzle cake usually goes down well and very easy to make0

we have one at work, the chocolate cake and carrot cake seem to be the most popular along with millionaire shortbread
then in no particular order lemon drizzle cake, coffee and walnut and victoria sponge, I find the small cakes are not very popular0 -
We have one at work too, some of the items we cut up for people to buy single slices/ pieces, and they can then make up a plate of various items. We tend to do four items for a pound, this way a single person, isn't obliged to buy a family sized loaf sponge etc., and also staff would buy a piece of something extra for their cuppy in the afternoon. All you need is paper plates and cling film, we found that we were not left with much as it was an extra 30p a slice, not for instance £1.50 for the full item so staff bought a wee bit extra. The cost per slice was worked out on the cost of the full item divided out with a few pence extra on the individual slice. Just an idea :-)Every days a School day!0

We have bake sales etc regularly at work and the things that go the fastest are caramel shortbread (a huge favourite!), lemon drizzle cake, lemon slice and melting moment biscuits.
With a staff of approx 250, it's easy to see what is popular and what isn't!the only debt left now is on credit cards! The evil loan has gone!! :j:j0 -
I used to run the kitchen in a cafe and there were a few cakes that I just couldn't make enough of because people kept buying them:
Victoria sponge
Lemon drizzle
Coffee & walnut
Carrot cake (I made it with cream cheese icing)
Millionaires shortbread
Scones (plain, fruit and cherry)
Not sure if it's a consideration, but of the above lemon drizzle and scones are the cheapest to make.
Meant to add, another thing we made that was extremely popular was jam & coconut sponge. This type of thing. I have no idea why as it's not really my cup of tea, but people went mad for it.0 -
Thank you so much for all your replies. With the exception of millionaires shortbread and the coconut cake I'd pretty much had the exact same cake ideas. Great minds eh? Thanks again xGrocery challenge June 2016

Anything you can make as a loaf cake or tray bake will save you time (and money probably) when lining tins, cutting them up and serving them. I got some of those loaf tin liners from Lakeland, reduced, it I've since seen them cheaper in Home Bargains or somewhere similar. Lemon drizzle and some kind of dense tea/fruit bread usually goes down well at my craft fairs. I often do Rocky Road with leftover cherries, melted chocolate, broken biscuits, marshmallows etc. Good as you can use up odds and ends and it's quick and cheap to do.
Good luck.

My Mum runs the coffee morning in the flats where she lives. Its not a charity one it just happens every Thursday morning. She buys in cakes rather than makes them. She never offers chocolate cake as it never sells and from the list above, she seems to be right.0

Hello again. I was wondering what to price cakes at as there was no info in the coffee morning pack. I'm going to be making a chocolate ganache cake, carrot cake, coffee & walnut cake, lemon drizzle cake, date & walnut cake, scones with jam & cream, shortbread and oaty cookies. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks xGrocery challenge June 2016
