  • Hi,

I've been reading through some of the recent posts about gold and silver hallmarks and I thought I'd clarify what the numbers stand for.

925 is sterling silver (if an item of jewellery is stamped 925 it is 92.5% silver or over in its composition). I remember one person mentioned that they had a 'gold' bracelet marked 925. This was either sterling silver plated in gold (known as vermeil) or sterling silver that had discoloured (sometimes they can take on a goldy tinge).

375 is 9kt gold (and is 37.5% actual gold content or over).

    585 is 14kt gold.

Those are the ones I'm certain of. According to the web, the following codes also apply to other types of gold:

    417 - 10kt gold
    500 - 12kt gold
    750 - 18kt gold (or 15kt seen in antiques)
    792 - 19kt gold
    833 - 20kt gold
    916 - 22kt gold
    1000 - 24kt gold (100% gold content)

The type of gold, such as rose gold, white gold, yellow gold etc will vary based on the composition of the metal, as most are alloys of various combinations of metals. For example, rose gold has gold and copper in it.

Gold plated items have a non-precious metal with a very, very thin coating of gold on top. Gold-filled is similar but with a much thicker coating of gold (sometimes several hundred times thicker so it doesn't rub off as easily). Gold filled jewellery and components are generally well looked upon on ebay.

I make and sell (and buy) jewellery on ebay so have a fair idea.

    Hope that helps,
    Tamara
  • BTW I temporarily dropped out there.. started a new job and have been really busy. Will see where I stand though now with my money for nothing amount and will change my sig. I wouldn't have added much to it though in the last few weeks.

Congrats all of you that did really well. Some of the amounts are really impressive!!!
  • let me know and I can add you to the list :)

Thx for the totals fdf - I'm really happy coz I've gone up to 4th in just a week (think I was about 11th or something last week) Well done everyone who's hanging on in there.

I've listed 5 things on ebay tonight and I'm going to ring the Bargain pages tomorrow and list 2 things in there that are too heavy to post (guillotine and a binding machine that I received from a Prince's Trust grant).

BF has donated some Guiness Book of Records - 2 of which are limited edition so I'm going to look in to selling those tomorrow.

I did the charity shops yesterday but didn't come up with anything exciting. The only thing I thought might be worth something is a beatrix potter thing which I can't remember the name of..... do you remember those balls with glitter in that you shake and it's like a snow storm or something? well its one of those - v. heavy and v. nice and 8.95 but I can't find any on ebay to compare it to as I don't know what they are called. I tried looking at paper weights but no joy so if anyone can suggest any searches I'd be grateful.

I've got college tomorrow night but will try and slot some matched betting in after.

I'm going for gold and am intending on pulling out all the stops to reach the next target. I haven't missed one yet and am only one matched bet a way (which I will place after typing this) from reaching tomorrows so I really don't want to miss the last target after keeping them all so far.

    Sorry for going on...

    Luv Jxx

OMG - I think I've just lost 231 matched betting

I backed and layed the portsmouth villa match on 2/12 but bet24 say the result was 2-3 and betfair say it was 2-2 which means I lose 231.03!!!

I've just posted on the MB newbie thread to see if anyone knows if I can get it back.

    I'm sad now......

As an avid villa fan I can assure you it was a 2-2 draw , luckily angel equalised in the last ten minutes , you need to check your betslip at bet24 in case you placed the wrong bet ? , if you did I wouldnt worry I have had a couple of bookies making errors like that but a quick e-mail and they correct it. Bet24 are a huge company so I wouldnt worry

Thx sirboz. I've just e-mailed them - their customer services aren't open 24/7. I'm bricking it now. I've checked the bet and I'm sure as I can be that it's OK. Fingers Crossed....I will let you know how I get on tomorrow.
