Veggie snacks

Not sure if this is the right place to post?
I have friends staying at the beginning of November, and one of them is vegetarian. I have no idea what food to buy/make. They are coming up quite late on Friday, so my main concern is ensuring there are some nice snacks (perhaps something warm) to greet them on arriving - any ideas?

I wouldn't worry too much about the vegetarian; what about just subbing out anything you would make with meat with quorn?
For example, you could make veggie lasagne with quorn mince for a meal.
For snacks, just stick to veggie pizza / veggie quiche, etc., and just do the same thing for everyone so that you don't feel that you are doing two lots of snacks, if you see what I mean.
DS2 was vegetarian for a long time and I just used quorn instead of meat, made life a lot simpler!0 -
Hi
Make this
http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/10757/roast-summer-vegetables-and-chickpeas
I made it for the first time a couple of months back and now make it all the time; it freezes well too. Add some rice and you have an easy and tasty meal. After roasting the veg I put everything into a covered casserole dish and simmer for about 45 minutes.
PS: Use in smaller quantities for a side dish - goes well with meat too!0 -
Humus and pitta sliced up like thick chips is great to put out on a plate and for people to pick at.0

Buy a few pizza bases and make your own veggie pizza. I use hm tomato sauce on the base with roast veg (peppers/red onion/garlic/aubergine etc) and cheese on top.
Can be prepared early then put in the oven for 15 minutes when your guests arrive and then put in slices on serving plates.2015 wins: Jan: Leeds Castle tickets; Feb: Kindle Fire, Years supply Ricola March: £50 Sports Direct voucher April: DSLR camera June: £500 Bingo July: £50 co-op voucher0 -

Careful with cheese, many types are made using animal rennet which means lots of vegetarians do not/cannot eat them (I believe this includes all Parmesan). Check the packet states "suitable for vegetarians". In fact, be careful with any packaged foods to check they are labelled as vegetarian-suitable so don't contain any hidden meat products, animal gelatine, animal-derived additives, and so on, and if you are making things from scratch make sure you don't forget and cook with meat stock etc. Some things can be really surprising. For instance Walkers beef flavoured crisps were vegetarian friendly, but the cheese and onion were not! It was due to the particular additives that were used in them.
Haven't you asked what sort of foods and dishes they like to eat? They are your friend, after all, I'm sure they won't mind your asking what they'd like you to do for them! Also if you don't know how strictly they take their vegetarianism I'd work to the strictest level, i.e. not cooking veggie food in the unwashed pan you just did bacon in!0 -
I agree with CupofChai, just ask what they would like! I am veggie and have never eaten meat. I do not like Quorn as it has what I assume to be a meaty texture and seems odd to me. So I would feel very awkward if someone assumed I liked Quorn stuff and, for example, cooked me Quorn burgers for a BBQ! I'd feel like I'd have to attempt to eat them out of politeness but wouldn't like them. I'd much prefer if someone asked what I would like. I'm not a fussy veggie (other than the Quorn) and often will just eat the non meat part of meal eg. sunday dinner at my ex's family would be roast pots (in oil), veg, stuffing and yorkshires - no veggie supplement.
That said you normally can't go wrong with pizza, nachos, jacket potatoes, pasta with tomato sauce etc!

ive been vegan for 10 years, and honestly theres nothing nicer than a plate of homemade lentil soup with some good bread, you could even leave out some cheese , pate, hummus etc...jacket potatoes with a chilli filling are tasty, but a more snack option could be to leave a plate of falafel, olives, hummus and some vegetable crudites
being a veggie is not all cheese sandwiches lol0
